Hehe, well ive been having words with my gfs dad and my dad who have both been engineers from apprenticeships and they say Stainless isnt brittle at all, he says you could hit em with a sledge hammer and they wouldnt snap??? They might bend but no snap, so im in two minds completely now?! What a dilema aye! 1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.

Well for me the problem is the fatigue life of the material, its like aluminium in that it has a finite life. Under stress it will work harden and then become brittle, this limit is something that can only really be calculated through exhaustive testing.

The other problem is the way it does fail when it gets to it's fatigue limit. It tend to go with very little warning. Every day is a school day ...........

even so it would be an unknown, with the arm being your control of where the car goes, if it fails at anything over 30mph on a road, its pucker up time. you would need a test base that can out stress any output that the device would recieve on the car, and then measure its duration until failure at this level, and unless you have a machine to do this you are stuck good buddy :)

Stainless isn't a material that I use much for structural work but if you can find out the grade, the method of welding (preferably the weld parameters) and any post treatment the parts have recieved I'll try to find out what they should stand. If I get stuck I have plenty of people with extensive knowledge of materials. Every day is a school day ...........

Cheers Roger, ill ask him what grade there made of, i think they also do testing as the company where he works make pumps for oil rigs so they know how to make stuff last!! 1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.
