Monster, perhaps I should give you belief again. I have just recently traded in my Elise (apparently you can't get baby seats to fit) for a 250bhp Saab 9-5. The diesel is just my commuter and work horse.

crumbs!!!! *surprised*

is that the sort of size you see people riding around with on the road? The type where you come round a corner, gears screaming, then back off and press the clutch to roll by, when just to make a good impression the dump valve goes HISS

RogerM, Cars made after 1998 can still be fitted with a towbar at home. The approved part is to do with the manufacturer and the type of car. If the car has a tow raiting then it is fine. Type approved is not going to cause much of a problem.

Lots of answers here, you can buy pre 98 cars for the rest of your life.

Ben,

you are spot on and I probably should stop reading and replying to this forum when I am pushed for time ......... that way you guys might have a clue what I am going on about!!!

You can fit the bar yourself for sure but the bar, ball and wiring has to be both approved and fitted in the approved way with the approved fasteners etc. The last time I checked it was not really any more expensive to have a bar fitted than buy a bar on it's own (around here anway).

The main reason I drive a 97 Passat is that it was all I could afford 4 years ago that would do the job and had the only car manufactures badge I trust (VW) on the bonnet. Since I am a senior engineer working for one of the worlds largest automotive component suppliers I have to put up with shitty american work ethics and being paid no money so when the Passat goes pop I'll be back on £100 run arounds like I have driven for the rest of my life!!!! I like to spend my "car fund" on something fun .. never going to be a tow car ... LOL
Thus the chances are I'll never own a car newer than the one I have now, nothing to do with towing .... unless I can get a job with a proper company ..LOL

However that said the towbar fitted to my car would be illegal if the car was a few months newer!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Hmm this is all interesting reading, my Audi is a September 1998 car, fitted with a brink detachable towbar. It looks a pukka piece of kit and brink are a well known towbar company but I am now wondering if it has this type approval bollocks! I hope so!
