Matty, what level of performance are you looking for?

The car I am currently (or would be if it ever comes back from blasting) building is going to be pegged at around 140BHP max, probably running nearer 110 most of the time. The 140 limit was chosen as a good, well built (speak to Turbo Hogster .... not dealt with him but personally but he is helpful and does great work by all accounts) box will handle that if driven with care. If you limit the boost available in 1st then that will help further.

(The other reason for 140 BHP is that it's not too hard / expensive to get there with a reliable build spec)

I'm not 100% sure but I think Alex B is running that kind of power through a standard box, or at least has done.

I have known 160 bhp cars run with standard boxes but equally they spent most of their time running closer to 110 BHP. They did last however at 160 BHP on teh odd visits to the track etc. but not what you'd call reliable!

Food for thought.

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

yea definatly mate. wel to be honest im only gonna be running 140 hp tops any how but i dont want the standard box to go on me specially if i buy all new bits but if it can take the power then it make sense use stadard bits also make sense to my wallet at the moment to. plus i wont be driving like a tit. You shopuld c my box at the mo thou it must have been weak from some else using it as it second hand. i was only runnin my motor in and all sudden it went. looked at the box and the layshaft to 1st motion shaft the teeth are gone completely there about 3 or 4 on each wheel. the rest it flat.

so yea if you rekon a standard box is good to 140 that should be more than enough. would you recommend me running it lower boost most of the time once i have it rolling roaded and say if it gets 130 hp yould you say it be good practise to run the lower most of the time espically for the gearboxes sake.

Seek advice from others on here too but if your sensible with it it should be ok at 140.

To be honest most of the people I know with turbo'd motors run them turned down a bit most of the time as it makes the car nicer to drive gently ..... which with modern traffic is all that you can do most of the time!!

More importantly, what torque do the miglias make? and how many miles do they do in between rebuilds?!

I personally would not consider building even a NA 1293 without a cross pin diff, let alone any turbo lump, after all they are only £150 (ish?) these days, the first time the diff shits itself you are faced with spending that much on gaskets, seals, diff pin, and a new oil pump.

Just a thought to save him a bit of dosh as hes on a budget. Preferrably Id fit a 4 pin too, but if hes on a b udget, is the engine going to be that torquey.
I have a friend with just a competition pin in his 1430 which has given him atleast 4 years of reliable driving.

I seriously doubt it!

PM Turbo Hogster on here ..... he's apparently the man when it comes to box rebuilds. I have PM'd him previously and he came back with a very reasonable quote!

the clubman kit uses the original 1st gear, but as the laygear is different, the ratios are still effected (ie - 1st gear ratio isnt standard!)

Is the mini gearbox easy to work on? I always thought gearboxes were not for the faint hearted of diy mechanics?

hmm a helical box should be ok for that sort of power output with sc drops, personally i wouldnt but thats my own opionion.

i sent you a pm back matty but the parts list was for a full rebuild.

just be wary of some recon boxs as they only change 4 bearings then chuck them back together which is fine for a 998 but might not be for a turbo lump.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas
