Nick, if the asbestos is in singe pieces leave it alone and just cover it up. you can even move it to a safer place and cover it if you are wearing gloves, mask etc, as asbestos is only dangerous in the fibrous form. so when you break it up you release the fibers and it is these fibers that you inhale and they then penetrate through the lung tissue and cause asbestosis. the way to remove it is to phone the council and have them get rid of it. I believe it is fairly cheap.
apbellamy if you do not have to remove the asbestos leave it alone, as said above when you start disturbing it thats hen you get trouble. you shouldnt even be removing the screws as this can cause the fibers to become loose. Asbestos will be on the pipes as it is an excelent heat insulator which is why many old exhause heat shields were made out of asbestos. If you want it investigating get in touch with your council. A local asbestos company in leeds calld Rodar may also be able to help. nice firm i almost worked for them.

hope this helps you both

Andy, encapsulation is generally done by painting it to seal in loose fibres. Wrapping in plastic won't really achieve this and may actually cause more mechanical damage to the asbestos leading to more fibres released, which is what you DON'T want.

wrapping it in 3 layers of plastic is the general solution in Norway when Asbestos is to be delivered to a terminal

Had another look. It's already pretty comprehensively wrapped in some form of duck tape. Wifey is getting some fresh batteries for my torch so I can have a proper look without disturbing anything. I think the lagging is purely in the cellar as the remnants of the old heating pipes that I can find are all unwrapped.

Unfortunately, it looks like it goes into the crawl space too and right up the boxed in bit (found a peep hole at the top).

Interestingly, the survey we had done when we bought the house only says property of this age may have asbestos. No specific mention of this pipe lagging. It's exactly as it was when we bought the house and is pretty plane to see...

with the effort some one has made to try and seal it in, i would be cautious. i'd also be cautious of any lieing dust in that area, as it has clearly been disturbd at some point.

talk to your council and see if you can get some one to come and have a look, maybe even tak a sample to find out it it actually is asbestos.

The rigmarole we have to go through at work is farcicle. The asbestos specialists are not mechanically minded so cannot dismantle the cooler end plates, we are not allowed to do any rigging or heavey lifting, so we have to all get together, get gowned up and each do our bit in a small tent. gets a bit cosey

That was what I was thinking. Obviously the plumber who disconnected the radiator above that pipe wasn't that concerned...

That said, last owner was captain bodgit...

I cannot believe that aspestos is still used/produced in other countries despite the known health risk.

That largest ilegal importer to the UK of banned refrigerants is China, and the Manufacturing plant at Ineos Chlor Runcorn of these phased out refrigerants was shut down, dismantled and sold to India, so they now manufacture the same refrigernants, and use it. funny thing is that China and India are becoming richer, while we are all becoming poorer. Its a fuuny old world.

to be honest, you are not really bothered are you ? since you'll buy an LCD TV thats likely been manufactured in China or India using these 'banned substances', cos they are cheep, and very efficient at what they do. Thats one reason why products manufactured else where cost so much,
