Can you actually break a diesel? a couple of my mates have got diesels and cane the crap out of them, still run sweet as a nut. I don't know anyone who has either.

in my old work van i hit the limiter in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th regularly over 65 000miles and i never had a problem with bits popping

I my memory serves me right these engines are fitted with an exhaust gas recirculation valve. (for emission reasons....)

If this valve is not operating correctly i think it could cause the problem you describe. Do a search on one of the vw/volvo (old v70 uses the same engine) sites. There is a lot of info on these valves, especially since people are blocking of this valve to get rid of the blue smoke when accelerating hard and gain a few hp

No the Volvo uses the I5 engine, not V6.

Also, check your camshafts every once in a while. They're made of butter and are a fortune. + there are four of the shit buggers. My mum's got an A6 with the same engine. Just changed the diesel pump at £1600. Will not be buying such engine again. Have seen som many gearbox failures (6-speed) and camshaft failures now.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
