Due to the way the gasses exit a turbocharger it is worth expanding the diameter, even if only for a short distance. They exit the turbine in a spiral creating a long path for the gas, if an expansion is used then the spiral is broken and the gasses flow straight.

Also looking for the maximum pressure drop across the turbine as little back pressure post turbine will affect spool up etc.

Here was my old set up -

Do you really feel that that exhaust pipe is short enough? I'd imagine that there'd be some restricion there!

Agree - you need to minimise back pressure to stop the turbo being strangled. Mine is straight through 2" then widens to 2.5" just after the selector onto a DTM with baffles removed. It's loud but the turbo does dampen it a little. Not sure if you'd get it through MOT in UK though. I think Benross had a custom made rear boxfrom Maniflow if my memory serves me right.

Hi,
What size it the outlet on the turbo?
I can't see any advantage to having an exhaust bigger than that.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

following on from the above and what blown imp posted,

I was thinking, the pressure in the exhaust manifold/ turbine inlet is considerable, I haven't measured it (yet) but suspect it will be somwhere near double the boost pressure in most cases. The reason this presure is there is due to the restriction caused by the turbine right?

So if we work out the area of the actual apertures between the turbine blades we should get somewhere close to a figure we can use to give us some idea of flow restriction if you get my drift...

So i'm thinking that the exhaust needs to be large enough to allow a pressure drop from the aperture of almost whatever the TIP pressure is.... or enough room for the gas to expand into.

You can stop pipes from buckling when bending them by filling them with sand, however I've never tried this with any thing bigger than a half inch diameter.

Aye, also interested in the rear tray... heard about them but never really seen one before. Looks easy enough to make, but I'm sure I'm wrong lol *happy*

I'll also be making one for my clubby, you don't know any where in Bristle that sells large sheets of aluminium?
