Just to be sure, is that 13mm from the head(with the washer removed) to the top, or from the "washer" (that is between the head and bottom of the spring) to the top?

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

13 mm from the top of the guide to btm
without the washer

this then gives scope to fit a higher lift cam of your choice in the future

I finaly got it sorted (I think)!!!!
I changed the guides to Mini spares bronze ones, got them 2 days before the IMM!
Reamed them to size and fitted new seals. When I started up the engine it still was a bit smokey.
Changed the oil from cheap 10/40 to Valvoline racing 20/50, took it for a spinn and the smoke was almost gone.
Made it to IMM in Denmark and back without big clouds of smoke.
There is still some smoke when turning off the engine when hot and then restart it after a while, but its acceptable.
The worying bit is that I can still see a bit of oil on top of the pistons when its been standing over night, is this normal??

I have now, new pistons/rings and rebored block. New seals and bearing in turbo. New valve guides/seals and valves (3000miles).

I cant pin point what was causing the smoke but I think it was a combination of many small "errors". Worn bore, worn guides, to thin oil, maybe valve guides fitted to high for 1.5 rockers (making the top hat hit the valve seals).

Should I just run it for a bit to get it run in and maybe the last bit of smoke will stop?

could be as you say but see if there is any oil mist in the pipe from the turbo pressure side if so it will be the turbo seals tired

here is a link which you will find VERY intresting for your new build and is so true born out of my experience as well

a little long but .....well worth it

Im planning on striping mine down to get to the source of my slight smoking coming out of the crankcase... It will probably be a full rebuild...as I have a SC/CR JK gearbox to be fitted. BUT I know what way il be running my new build in!!! Thanks Steve, VERY interesting stuff..

No traces of oil in the pipe from the turbo (new seals and bearing).

I have read about that break in method before. Might be the right way for running in the rings but im not sure its the right way for running in the rest of the engine (if completely rebuilt).
