In metal work class at school one of our projects was to coat metal by heating it red hot then dipping in it used engine oil. Apparently it gave a fairly robust finish but not sure about the heat resistance of it. We just did it to get the oil on fire really! On 7th Nov, 2008 Nic said:

Jay, sounds like like your on about blueing (SP?), it does the trick to help stop steel from corrosion but not too sure how successful it would be on a manifold as its continuously going from hot to cold etc.. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fusion-Fabri..._homepage_panel

You can "blue" iron and steel. If you can't find it, I'll explain how to do it. It looks smart, provides great corrosion resistance, etc, etc.

The ceramic coating is called "Jet Hot Coating" here in the US.
