In metal work class at school one of our projects was to coat metal by heating it red hot then dipping in it used engine oil. Apparently it gave a fairly robust finish but not sure about the heat resistance of it. We just did it to get the oil on fire really!

I'm sure that the oil quench was a factor It is mild steel.. and a load of oil went all over it!! anyway, manifold looks great! only rust is on some of the welds..

Jay, sounds like like your on about blueing (SP?), it does the trick to help stop steel from corrosion but not too sure how successful it would be on a manifold as its continuously going from hot to cold etc..

You can "blue" iron and steel. If you can't find it, I'll explain how to do it. It looks smart, provides great corrosion resistance, etc, etc.

You could look into getting it glazed as well. Sandblast it and then get it glazed, pottery style. (ceramic coated) You can DIY, but it needs some high purity right shizzle.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

The ceramic coating is called "Jet Hot Coating" here in the US.
