what if i wanted to fit an intercooler is that dificult? how do they connect up? im guessing intercoolers have an intake from an air filter then an out take that gos to the turbo,
is that it? is it that easy or am i way off lol cheers guys

Nah, an intercooler cools the compressed air not the intake!
In simple terms, you plumb it where the orange silicone pipe is between the turbo and the plenum chamber.

The pipe i had only reached up to where the wiper motor is, ive put my bolt on k&n on it. Hopefully with the bonnet slightly raised it will be fine there.

Steve, Check out www.manchesterminis.co.uk
The 'technical' section has a bit on turbochargers - some of my own and garrett stuff. Gives a pretty good overview...

cheers dave,
is an intercooler really worth while, how does it cool the air ? just like a radiator i assume ? if thats the case if you dont mount it at the front then it wont work ????

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

you've got it in one. cooler air is always a good thing. its an air to air cooler, a radiator is an air to water cooler. End of the day the cooler one reduces the temperature of the hotter one.

As with rads they need a cool supply of air, doesnt have to be front mounted but needs a good air flow.

do you loose much boost pressure with a intercooler?

if it's restrictive (too small an internal area) you will drop boost across it.
If it's one with a nice large internal area (eg Escort Series 2 RST) you will drop hardly anything, even at high rpm.

Remember airflow is related to power... hence a restriction will ultimately limit power...

Incidentally, everyone says that you won't see the benefit of one at only 7psi boost...
Interestingly, none of these people have ever measured (accurately) air temps of the charge air of the std turbo at this boost pressure.
Is it worth the hassle of fitting one? probably not.
Would you see a benifit? Maybe - measure the air temps, and if more than 70 degrees, then yes - so long as an unrestrictive unit is fitted...

Sierra Cosworth intercoolers are one of the best designs of intercooler core around.
They were designed for fitting in the limited space above a radiator in the sierra's however, meaning the frontal area is not overly large. It partially makes up for it in it's thickness, but not totally ideal.
But - Fit one to a mini - especially the 4wd version, and you won't have any charge air problems!

Bear in mind space is tight. You will only get one in a rounnose in front of the plugs - needing holes and ducting in the bonnet, and lots of bracketry and new entry pipes TIG welding in, or mount it above the bumper, with the grill suitably cut out!

They fit beutifully behind a clubby grill however.

Remeber that having holes in the bonnet is all very well, but ambient air, only matching the surface area of the 'holes' will actually flow through the intercooler - minimising it's effectivness.
A large 'MEAN' duct in the bonnet, the full width of the intercooler, would be much better!

In all aspects of fitting intercoolers - as with every 'performance enhancing' feature - try and think about what it is you want to achieve, and how well it will actually achieve that goal, with attention to maintenance, aesthetics, performance, cost, etc...
I'm sure i've said enough on the subject now (yes i'm bored of typing) so think about the above, and crack on with your plan of action.
