As robert said if you wanted to save a bit of money get a Bini 1 with a few exterior bits and pieces and buy a bluefin, extra 30bhp for under £300.

Its a simple re-progam of the ECU - no need for £300 of any thing!!

If you want power go for the bini s.

If you want handling and good mpg, get a cooper,

If you wanna give Mr Brown less money get the diesel.

So 3 years of her prevaricating and we are off to look at one this afternoon.

From having a read about it seems that PAS pumps crapping out is the most common fault.

Any other info from anyone with experience?

Agreed about the 5 speed alright.
I had to recon my box last thursday, only 77k getrag. the clutch looked grand, but changed it anyway.
But appart from that we are very happy with it.
Best of luck Tom

I read somewhere that in earlier ones there have been some issues with the oil leaking out out of self lubricating part of the supercharger with obvious results.

Dazed and Confused....

Cheers chaps, we are looking at between 04-06 kind of age, so hopefully the teething problems were sorted by then.

I have to say I'm confused now about gearboxes, some people say it is just the 5 spd that are weak and the 6 spd is OK, others say both? In any case I'll have to have a good drive and listen to it.

Yeah, power steering pumps seem to be an issue - I know 2 people who have had the pumps give up and they weren't cheap to replace.

Not sure about the 6 speed boxes, but the 5 speed is the peugeot/rover MA/R65 box which was used in the AX/Saxo/106 and on Rover K Series engines. They are notorious for diff bearings going amongst other things. The 6 speed box I think is a completely different box altogether.

My other half had an '06 'S'. Really nice car. Unfortunately it drank like a fish, even with her light right foot - 30ish mpg. On a blast less than 20 mpg was seen regularly. 6 speed box was very stiff/clunky while cold - so much so that my other half struggled pushing the lever all the way to engage reverse.

I pre ordered one when they were launched on a 51 plate, had repetative problems with door windows not sealing when doors were opened and shut, the glass should rise and fall 1/4 of a inch into the seal when the door is used, this was because the ECU failed due to moisture. Not a problem when under warranty but I wouldn't want to pay BMW prices myself.

I have a R53 Mini Cooper S, been tuned by West Tuning, on 3 different rolling roads saw 258bhp, AMD was one!

On a run we see 40mpg, on the track its down to 6mpg!

Other folk here have said their weakness's, but I'm more than happy with mine!

Not top clues up on binis but some run the 5 speed box which has the same gearkit as the PSA MA /rover R65 gearbox and it's not the best in a car as heavy as tge bini :) I'm sure being into your pugs you'll know straight away if there's an input bearing/diff bearing failure :)

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

pre 2004 facelift coopers and ones had the old R65 5 speed gearbox which doesnt have the best reputation, cooper S's have had a Getrag 6 speed since day one which from experience gives very little issues atall.
Post 2004 ones and coopers got a newer Getrag 5 speed box which is much better than the old R65 box, although often noisier (idle rattle etc) due to the very very thin oil used.

My g/f had to have the 6speed box on her 30ish mile 55plate cooper S under warenty due to noise and notchiness. is was starting to make similar noises about 8k later, but we sold it on.
