My house has a 100amp incomer, i supose you could fit a VERY large single phase jobbie, id expect your neighbours to complain though with the transient dip when you switch it on would cause everyones lighting in the street to flicker. LOL On 26th Oct, 2004 TurboDave16v said:
Is it A-Series only? I think it should be... So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'... On 26th Oct, 2004 Tom Fenton said:

I was assuming it was a step up Tx as the post said 220 to 455 but you've got a good point Mr Sprocket. Robert, what connections have you got on the Tx, have you actually got enough to confirm it is 3ph in and out? If not, why not just do your invertor thingy to give you the 3ph 230 and then see if you can wire the motor up as delta? They are normally easy to change by moving links inside the terminal box, the motor data plate should give you some info. yes i have done that before neil , unfortunately ,withis motor ,its encapsuated wire ends star wound 3 speed motor ,,,2.5/2/1.5 hp from the year 1963 ,and its a bit more sensitive to voltage stability on the 3 legs .the tranny is a 3 ph type ,constructed like a b shaped laminated frame with 3 times foot long coils ,and 4 terminals per coil ,must weigh 100k's! if it runs 230 into it that gives a 476 volts out i think ? I just took the easy route and converted mine to a 3HP 240V motor and it's working fine, really didn't need 3HP but as I had one ..... Every day is a school day ...........

i asked my old man, he converted our big compressor form 3ph to 1ph... but by fitting a single ph motor...sorry

It's a bit high but within 10% (just) which is generally considered acceptable. You might find your motor is stamped up as 415/440 anyway in which case it's only 15v high. Also, can you rig up your invertor to chuck out a little less than 220 so you will get less than 455 out of the Tx? still looking at this niel ,if i put 230v into a 220/455 v transformer .what do i get out of the high side then is it a simple ratio step up ? Yes a transformer is a simple turns ratio. However 230v mains is a nominal voltage anyway so putting 230v in will be fine. The thing you have to watch, obviously is the current rating of the transformer.

So why do you need the transformer?

Yes ph to ph on a mains supply is 415V, but will the 3ph that robert is creating be?

Apparently you need a tranny to create the 415v between the single phase live and neutral, then the motor generates the third phase.

All sounds a bit complex to me. I agree Axel 415v is normally measured ph to ph, so a 230v supply ph to ph would be 415v. I am guessing Robert that this is to drive your new lathe? yes ben and mill and ramp...etc Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM |
