I was reading somewhere that BMW de-tuned the new 3 series so it wouldn't embarass the M3

this is correct, most of the 6cyl engines were de-tuned. the 330i 3.0l6cyl can push 300 and the 335 has been known to have been maped to 420, everything was stock..

Well finally got the re-map done yesterday by the local Audi specialist. He is now a local dealer for Celtic Tuning and their technical guy was up so got a chance to speak to him about it all.

Because of my particular engine and output, he did tell me that I wouldn't notice any huge gains or massive changes in the car over the equivalent work on a 1.9. I went for it anyway and it is still early days. I spent the first hour after the work stuck in traffic and then a short burst on the motorway. Then a couple of hours moving one of the minis around on the trailer.

What i've noticed so far is thet it feels more lively and wants to rev a bit more. Pick-up from low revs is considerably quicker and smoother. Not sure on the torque as i've now got a much lighter trailer to my old one and still getting used to it. Certainly pulling out of junctions and up hills doesn't pose any problems but again it always did pull well.

Apparently I still have another 10% still to come as the ECU needs to learn my driving style or something so will see how it goes over the next few days.
