Got to say I'm still struggling to work out what final drive to go for in the hill climber (or whether to go for a close ratio box or not for that matter) I've a feeling that I'll end up starting with whatever I've got lying around and go from there.

Any ideas?

I think that you need to work out your likely top speed for whichever courses that you will compete on, take an average and then select a diff ratio that will match your maximum revs to that speed in top gear.

3.76:1 is such fun *laughing*

I would never consdder going lower than 3.44 even on an all out high powered turbo motor *wink*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

rob, ive decided on a 3.76 (on a std a+ gearset cos i have a rebuilt one lying about so = free)

i reckon on most of the bends on the hills near me a 3.44 wouldnt have enough balls but it would be buzzing its nackers off in 2nd

Got a new 3.7 for ok money, and reckon itll make 3rd more flexible at the speeds im hoping for

3.76 makes fourth more useble, rather than third.

How fast do you want to go, mine does 103mph at 6800rpm

Running a 3.76 must be 4th gear. I have a handy gearbox calculator sortware but cant remember where i got it. If anyone wants it pm me your e-mail and i will send it.

Remember to take into account where your peak power is and what your max revs will be, the DON has a 3.9 diff, but max revs is 9200rpm, so top speed is theoretically around 135mph, usual trap speeds are between 105 and 115 mph though on the 1/4 mile, depending on gas or not.

Your havin a laugh*laughing*

Thats in fourth mate, why do you need to go faster, its a road going almost daily driver. 70 on the motorways is a bit much with the staigh cut drops tough, just waiting on a decent set of MPi carpets*tongue*

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i've got a 3.9 and with my engine its way way way to low. i'm hitting the rev limiter far too quick and not making any use of the torque i have in the 4-7k region. it maxes out at about 97mph with just over 7k on it.

mines getting a 3.1 in it over winter.

Surely you hit higher speeds quicker your times will be less with a lower terminal speed?

Id be inclined to say that if you hit the limiter before the line, i would agree the FD is too short. I would be aiming to cross the line with the engine just reaching the limiter, or if you have done the sums, cross the line with the engine at peak power

i've found this website good for calculating my final drive. i've used it to find out what my actual speed is as i've found my speedo under-read.....

yup, was on the limiter before the line sprocket.

plus mine makes a lot of power lower down so it would be better to have the limiter lower and change sooner.

its a case of matching it for the engine, unfortunately i just left the FD in the box that it was built with as i was short of time and it is/was too short.

Still, better to play and find out.

Plus i'm sure it will be fine for my NA 16valver that i'll rev the knackers off.
