Must admit, I did have this problem years ago, but when using locktabs, I had no issues.

Strangely, any car I have used since with more modern engines, has never had a problem with bolts coming loose, with no locktabs, or locking mech of any sort.

Although lots of Jap cars use metric fine in these areas....wonder if there is a reason ?
Is the downpipe etc securely fastened to make the entire assembly more rigid so there are less loads placed on the manifold ?

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

Yes Steve you might well be onto some thing here...... My down pipe mounting on the gearbox only lasts a few weeks before it cracks and i do the rest of the year with out any mounting, all is well apart fro my loose nuts! you may be onto some thing, maybe my engine isn't held in well enough, thinking about it does move around alot on the rollers, where you can see it.
