For the triangle (3) and the crank (2), they are 1/4" UNF from memory but I can't remember the lengths.

You only need countersunk for the crank (2) if you're using duplex (or, possibly, belt).

The 10 or 11 are the cover bolts - all of them are bolts on the standard setup, not like the pic of TD's alloy plate where some are studs.

Ignore the (nearly) top but left hole in the photo (that's for the alternator or dynamo) and you can count two different "rings", the outer one (where the two hex heads are) of 11, or move in on the left and the "ring" is 10....

EDIT - have a look here and there are photos I took of the two different standard setups

If you have the 11 bolt cover, the two "inner" holes then become where the tensioner is bolted.

Ah it all makes sense now.. :)

The thing is, im fitting a K head, and the kit supplies an alloy 10 bolt timing cover...but when I dismantled my engine I noticed I had an 11 bolt plate.

Do I need to buy the 10 bolt plate, or is the 11 bolt plate compatible with the 10 bolt cover? (I need to buy a new plate anyway so may as well go with 10 bolt plate?) but does the 10 bolt plate fit my block??? Is it all interchangable???

Hope that makes sense!!! :)

Plates to blocks are interchangeable - they cleverly used two of the 10 bolt holes for the tensioner bolts when they extended the plate to 11 bolts, the extras being "outside" the block.

You can even fit an 11 bolt cover to a 10 bolt plate but the gasket will be a little weak in one small area as the shape of the plate is slightly different where the gasket sits just at that one point.

One small caveat, some early blocks have a casting "lump" that gets in the way of one of the bolts on an 11 plate system - search against my user name or mikes1098 and you'll find a picture.

Really, you just want the best pair (10 or 11 bolt) for your chosen drive - the holes in the block are all identical, just that small caveat about an extra bit of casting in the way of one of the 11 bolts on some early blocks.

Hi,

Jus had a look at the engine, and matched the plate and cover to the block - just a query...there is a hole in the plate and cover very near to the oil gallery plug - but no fixing point available in the block?

Post a photo - if it's the 11 bolt setup, one of them doesn't go into the block or threads in the plate, it is simply a nut and bolt between the cover and plate.

This is the one some early blocks have a casting lump in the way of...
