Turns out i have the 20773 pitons (sigh of relief) so I think they'll be fine, does anyon have any infomation/dimentions on bottons to replace the circlips though? Thanks again for all the information, if i build another engine then the hypertec's are looking like a good choice.

Cheers. Chris

My bad... 'puter numb-nutz me... didn't know what the poll deal was... So here again -

I haven't read all the postiongs on this thread - but would just like to add my 2-pennyworth. Some have already spoken of Graham's input.

Graham Russel designed the Hypatech-made large bore and non-standard (factory type) Hypatec pistons. Hypatec then started flogging these pistons to all and sundry (i.e. to the likes of Minisport Australia) - contrary to their original agreement of exculsive distribution. So Grham moved to another extreme-quality piston manufacturer and did a re-design in the process. These pistons are now available for 998 (as flat tops, but machinable for dish) in 20. 40, 60, 80 and soon 100 over-sizes. He also had the 73 and 73.5mm ones re-done, these have a large dish to make it easier to get sensible CRs with most currently used heads. This piston range is also available dfrom Mini Spares Centre, Potter Bar, England. I use these pistons extensively in road and race applications.

Both pistons are massively strong and will with-stand turbo use.

What continually amazes me is why folks want the cheapest piston they can lay their hands on. Aside from the valve spring, the piston/ring package takes the biggest beating in any engine. My advice - don't skimp on the pistons. If they do bad, it is generally a very costly excercise.

Cheers, KC

Are these the Minispares P20950 pistons?

Yep - since AE hepolite dropped that flat top 998 piston range (well - almost all 998 pistons now) MSc used that part number as easy reference. And they are direct replacements for the last P20950 flat top pistons - except better quality of course!

Something I have come across through building and maintaining a fair number of 998cc class one grass track motors is how quickly the ring lands wear on the last/latest 998 'slipper' type, press fit wrist pin pistons. They barely last a season before being badly deteriorated. Certainly quicker than the 20773 piston ring lands - though these are prone to developing cracks in the skirt/pin area after a seasons racing. No problems wahtsoever wit hthe GR pistons.

Thats good because I've used the 20950 pistons in my 998 turbo build.

They have also been used successfully by others on this forum on 998 turbos.

I suspect that they heve been used on the most powerful 998 in the world, i.e. mine. I'll keep claiming this til someone proves me wrong.
