Does anyone ever plumb in the heater manifold?

I would be starting there :)

I would still start with a heated inlet, for good reason *happy*

Thread revival (I used the search as you lot say to alllll the time)

I think I've got carb icing... and it's effing gay!

Heading to work this morning and it's needing some serious revs. Get onto the A45, going down the slip road and I'm taking the revs up high in second, then shift to third, give it some throttle and nothing... it's like it's been starved of petrol.
I pump the accelerator and just get nowhere with it, so drop back down to second, rev more and get somewhere with it.
Back up to third and it's ok(ish), 4th, nothing, no power again.

So the whole of the problem is... it idles fine but you put your foot down (in any gear, but the higher the gear the worse it is) it just doesn't do anything. It's as if it is getting no petrol so none of the cylinders are firing. It's been a bit dodgy recently, as if it had developed a little misfire at low revs in high gears.

So does this sound like carb icing?
I'm going to plumb in my water heated manifold tonight (hopefully) and see if that solves it but other than that, not sure.

Just to say, non-turbo, HIF 38, K&N cone filter.

Plumb in the manifold, also putting an airbox back on with duct to near the exh manifold will help massively compared to a K&N.

Yeah, I've got the standard air box from my project that i could stick on and then make some kind of induction system (will get the chavs crying that i'm doing it wrong)
it's just a very difficult drive to work at the moment :(

Changed the manifold for one with water take offs, changed the filter for an air box and now the cunt wont even start.

It's got spark, it's got petrol (and WD40) in the carb, all I can think of is that the manifold is leaking petrol but I can't see/smell/taste/feel any so what the fork?

Start you bar steward!
I'm out of ideas. How can changing a manifold have such an effect?

The problem is not related to hardware I would believe but to the manipulation itself maybe ?

how about starting it ghetto style with some petrol straight into the carb ?

Maybe you fouled the fuel pipe or something like that ?

Edit :

And the answer to carb icing is very simple : WOT !

Did petrol straight into the carb and nothing, fuel pipe is pumping fuel fine aswell.
So taking that into account and taking the fact that I have spark into consideration all I can deduce is that these either aren't mixing or... or what?
What would honestly stop it from starting?
I barely touched the carb so there should be no issues there. If I can't start it I'll take the manifold off again and have a check inside the carb.

How are u checking the spark ? You need to check that spark is coming out of the lead, so stick a screwdriver in its end and hold it close to a head stud.

take the spark plug out the head, stick it in the end of the HT lead and rest it so it is earthed, turn the engine over and watch for a spark.

If there is fuel, spark and you didn't alter timing, I can't see no reason it wouldn't start.

How about the connections on the carb ?
Are they OK ?
It could end up being super lean even with choke if anything that is after the throttle is not connected ? (I am thinking out loud here ...)
Like your brake booster pipe !

Well we got it started, first hurdle!
Now we need to get it running right.
At the moment it gets major flat spots, you can't pip the throttle, it just bogs down; you've got to really slowly come on the power/
It back fires aswell.
I could do with a new coil and might get a new condenser and points. Can't think of much else.

They were a bit moist when I pulled them out at first... brb, gonna go and check...

Back!

All four spark plugs are suitably blackened.

black is too rich
you want them chocolate brown.

maybe as you reffited the air cleaner box, the air path is restricted much more than the open air setup you had.
so you have to lean up your settings (have the jet go up)

but I didn't know the air flow could be that different.

What air box is it ?
Early A+ or late carb ?

Removed the airbox and elbow and stuck the K&N back on as I thought similar to you but it had similar results.
I reckon it's either leaking air or the air path is blocked. (first one seems like quite a possibility imo)

It's from a 1990 998 so late carb.

if the plugs are wet, its flooded. You will never start a flooded engine no matter how much fuel you put through it. If anything, adding more fuel will make it worse. You need to dry out the cylinders as best you can and stick the plugs on the gas burner to burn off the fuel. don't get the plugs glowing as that will damage them
