HI all,I feel like I'm defending this clutch. I guess I am , so I'll have another go .Turbo dave, good discution,I think we're on crossed wires. I was talking of when your between gears, when the sincro rings are slowing down or speeding up all of the gear box mass to the speed of the ( nearly chosen ) gear. This includes plate, idler, primary, 1st motion, lay gear and it's mates. with all this lot dont you think 1 more plate is little differance. Drag is'nt realy an issue as unless the plate or plates have FULLY disengaged , the sincro's cant match the gear speeds so shifting is very difficult. It hapens quickly but by the time the clutch stars clamping or even draging the syncro's have done there job.
I've never noticed any extra wear in 3 decades after initial probs were sorted and this was related to the center plate heating up and binding on it's drive lugs or dowells or however its held.
H'eres a pic of a 5 speed box I built , sent a pic to an English mini place, a few month's latter were selling their own.
Mark

That will help in an upshift - they're basically acting like a brake - but in a downshift, that'd be worse for the synchros as they'd have to increase the friction disc speed, and accelerate the drop gears, which have this 'extra' drag...

Downshifts are always very bad.

Dave,

I can see / appreciate where you are coming from and it makes sense but multiple plate clutches used else where in the world most notoriously on bikes & I have thought that they must have found a way to protect the synchros, so what is it that would cause the Mini synchros to fail?

Would the difference not be that the bike gearboxes were designed specificaly with multi plate clutches in the design criteria, rather than a gearbox designed for a single plate then modified to a twin?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

leeds/wakefield.

i'd be surprised if you find a bike box that uses syncros these days, if ever.
bare in mind bike cluches are tiny by comparison to car clutches so inertia is much much lower.

Bike clutches are also small in diameter and very thin.

Take a look at the synchros in a 998 fiesta, or even a fiat Uno. They are huge comapred to the little things in mini transmissions.

I'm not saying they'll fail the first time you change gear, but they will wear significantly faster - exponentially faster if you drive aggressivly.

But what sort of a lifespan would they really give ? And what would people find acceptable ?

Staffordshire or Northamptonshire

I'm with Dave on this. The diameter of the plate makes a big difference to inertia.

But i like the clutch and if you have had no problems over years it sounds good.

Would our hard worked boxes last long enough to wear out the synchs ?? lol

Of the clutch mods Ive seen so far....Id say the double diaphragm verto looks the best.

Followed by this twin plate. When you all say about synchros and baulk ring problems etc...
Are you all having trouble changing gear ? One think I never recall, is having difficulty changing gear on mine. But the way some talk here, being afraid to go to a twin design, it would seem lots are having trouble changing gear ??
