HI all,I feel like I'm defending this clutch. I guess I am , so I'll have another go .Turbo dave, good discution,I think we're on crossed wires. I was talking of when your between gears, when the sincro rings are slowing down or speeding up all of the gear box mass to the speed of the ( nearly chosen ) gear. This includes plate, idler, primary, 1st motion, lay gear and it's mates. with all this lot dont you think 1 more plate is little differance. Drag is'nt realy an issue as unless the plate or plates have FULLY disengaged , the sincro's cant match the gear speeds so shifting is very difficult. It hapens quickly but by the time the clutch stars clamping or even draging the syncro's have done there job.

That will help in an upshift - they're basically acting like a brake - but in a downshift, that'd be worse for the synchros as they'd have to increase the friction disc speed, and accelerate the drop gears, which have this 'extra' drag... Downshifts are always very bad. Dave, I can see / appreciate where you are coming from and it makes sense but multiple plate clutches used else where in the world most notoriously on bikes & I have thought that they must have found a way to protect the synchros, so what is it that would cause the Mini synchros to fail? bikes generally use dog boxes rob, but i agree there must be an alrternative "Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun"

Would the difference not be that the bike gearboxes were designed specificaly with multi plate clutches in the design criteria, rather than a gearbox designed for a single plate then modified to a twin? Is it A-Series only? I think it should be... So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'... On 26th Oct, 2004 Tom Fenton said:

i'd be surprised if you find a bike box that uses syncros these days, if ever.

Bike clutches are also small in diameter and very thin.

I'm with Dave on this. The diameter of the plate makes a big difference to inertia.
