This may sound daft. The side that is difficult to turn, is the wheel bearing/hub/outer CV ok?

I really don't understand this. When you say difficult to turn what do you mean:

1) Car not moving, difficult to turn steering wheel left or right?
2) When moving, steering loads up?
3)With car jacked up (wheels off floor) its more difficult to turn steering wheel?
4) When pushing around the garage it wants to go straight and steering is heavy?

Which of the above best describes the problem? only '2' and '4' will be caused by the diff.

I'm mainly concerned about swirl in the runners caused by the tangential entry.

just re read the complete post,
when you jack one wheel, it doesn't want to turn as if the diff where locked?

Found the problem when |I bolted the crown wheel to the diff it locked it completely. I found this out, whilst undoing the bolts in the vice it started to turn. So i tried a different crown wheel not that, checked the bolts and they were fine. It's hopefully sorted as now have replacement diff :)
