The 2.5 TDi is a cracking engine but it is a heavy lump. I've got the same as Tom - had it for 20 months now and done over 40k miles in it. Its not the best on economy but effortless to drive. I got mine chipped up to 220 (well thats what they told me anyway!) - far better pickup than before.

When I bought the car I was advised to go for the 1.9 as it would be better on economy and is apparently a better handling car. Not all together convinced although I found the extra power made all the diferance to the drive.

As for finding one, it took me nearly 7 months before i eventually got the right car with low mileage.

Having said all that, I'm delighted with it and wouldn't change it.

Modern Volvos are front wheel drive.

The VAG 2.5tdi V6 is prone to oil leaks.....a LOT. Otherwise a good engine.

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

Agree with this, I'm still trying to make mine oil tight.

warf ..
you're all nuts ,
it seem that I'm the only one to think that you can buy a nice rover 25 or 45 2.0d with low milage for under this price,
whatever I've used one, a 2001 model, really it was very good, cheap ,made a lot of km without throwing money , strong and very robust engine, silly mpg (did less than 7l/100km in city, and less than 5.5/6 in normal usage).
interior is well made and assembled, comfortable, with no troubling noise. what do you want more , I sometimes miss it , as it was nice to drive daily to go at work?
I just replaced it with a range rover, cause at 190 000 km I didn't want to give it new drive shaft joints, a drive belt , and steering pump line (well any excuse to buy the range *tongue*) keeping a mini to go at work .
buy a rover

to be honest i did'nt mention a rover cause i'm a secret rover fan & i think afew are bmw tdi engines, 75's i think, seen a few in my price range too! been in one a 2ltrturbo diesel, a lil slow but could have been the miser driver that was obsessed withgetting high mpg

for the money i'd consider a rover! if i cant find a a4 *tongue* they sound good to me from what you chaps have said & a few other peeps i know!

not after super speed, just much the same a mr fenton really, a quatro tdi sounds just the job!!!!! i do want to tow with it, but.... the 1.9tdi is a good 2nd!
rover third!

volvo has gone frontWD what are they thinking??????????? the mummy wagon has gone wrong wheel drive sacraledge

whats the storey on saab/vauxhals? front wheel drive i know

towing lugging/ppl moving is my main bit at 1st then it'll be a daily! towing the mini to events, only cause if i bust i get home!

SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

the Search-section on this forum is blummin superb & simple to use, unlike some other forums, without the search-section & the help of this bunch of chaps on here i'll never be able to !!!Start the day with a 998cc turbo!!! :) i'm getting closer though!

I had a Rover 420td for a bit over a year. The engine etc was great. The car was just ok.... And mine was the older crappy engine with no intercooler. Totally reliable though.

But they are cheap, and drive well enough.
Having owned a BMW 525tds as well ( mid 90's vintage )

I would never buy any car with that engine again.
