Left school at 16 with 3 'O' levels, all grade 1 or 2s though.

Did 4 year mechanical engineering apprenticeship, then design draughtsman, then technical sales engineer. Did HNC Mech on day/block release.

Director by the age of 30 when I set up in business with a load of mates after our employer sold off the business. Eventually sold our business for a seven figure sum.

Bought a small firm of consultants in 94.

Got a formal qualification in water and environmental management in 96. Accredited as an Incorporated Engineer.

Now do as little as possible for the most cash so that I have time and funds to play with my mini.

I would say that the most formative years are your twenties. Get that bit right and the rest will follow. If you want to stay in Motorsport, then get the best qualifications you can even if it means going on to Uni. Do not take any old job without a career path as you could be stuck in a rut for the next 30 years.

I love my job, although like most people, there are bad days. What I like the most is that I rarely see the same thing twice and certainly never have 2 days the same.

Getting my RICS membership was challenging but rewarding

Really. How do you find it?

I'm just finishing my first year of a degree course in this. So far I have found it interesting, though next year sound like it gets a lot more relevent to building surveying.:)

Thought i'd post up my recent sucess!!

I went for my first career interview today, at the Rolls Royce facility next to Goodwood, for the position of "Bespoke Engineer" and I got the job!!

Im well happy! Will definately be making some progress with the mini now im on a very very good wage aswell :)

I'll be in the bespoke team, which manage all the custom bits people want putting on their cars, like custom paintjobs, interior adjustments, different materials, cigar holders, etchings and all that sort of stuff!

So yeah im really pleased, just fancied reviving the thread I started, wouldn't have thought i'd be at this opportunity back then when i made the first post:)

Cheers

Malta (Ex. Scotland)

I'm 18 and I've done a 2 year tech college course in Panel Beating and Spray Painting.Still waiting for the final exam to get my Journeyman's Cert.
Was an apprentice course so got in 2 years of experience as well. Now have to do another 2 years as stated in my contract.Pay is shit.Still on apprentice pay plus small summer rise.Bout 65 quid a week.

Was thinking about something a bit more interesting.Long distance truck driver maybe or petrol station attendant.Easy work, massive pay.The attendant job I mean.

Feeling rather outta place amongst all these uni degrees and CVs as long ar your arm*happy*

BTW Congrats Richie and the best of luck mate!!

Out of all the quls here this one impresses me the most someone who understands the real meaning of being qualified well done to you sir.

My left school when I was 16 served my time as a Construction Plant fitter With Caterpillar, While I was at that I done a DEG in Engineering Science over the 4 years I 2005 I went to Spain where I had been before on work leave and spent 6 months there helping My uncle run a Cartridge making company which I ended up running nearly killed me,
went from there back to the green land to tech level 2 Mechanic to apprentices had an accident at the collage which nearly ended my days when I recovered I went a got my self a certificate in Training and education I also got a certificate in Health and safety

during all that I started another business selling training equipment to collages which I still run as well as my latest venture working with my hobbies.

allot done in 23 years and all still to do lol

trough all they years what have I learned the only real way to learn is trough the university of life.

jus been looking at oxford brookes....unless i get me alevels in maths, physics and chemisty i dont think i will be getting into there!! although that would be my first choice if i can get the qualifications between now and then. i will have to look into it.

cov looks good though and more chance of me getting into there. time will tell i guess, still mhave another year of my apprenticeship and will most likely work for a year then go off to uni.

we shall see. thanmks for that info though *happy*
