yep i was a bit miffed but having said that we have been using that main shaft for years, so it has evently given up the ghost. made a bit of a mess of 3rd gear, i tried to rescue it, it had some micro welding on the back of the gear running face, manage to get 95% off but still run a bit to rough for my liking with that power output. so mat has got to try and get a 3rd gear.

I`d say that there`s a slight problem with the right peddle Matty *smiley*

& i use an old idler gear & weld it to a piece of angle with a drill hole in it to bolt it to the gearbox

I had to do that years ago to replace a single row bearing without stripping the box down... crafty arn`t i ??? *smiley*

Get Karl to make you a titanium shaft Matty, then it might flex/twist instead of breaking *smiley*

that's a good idea Matt, you have to be crafty some times *wink* I didn't have any old S/C Idler gear to do that on.

Not thought about a Titanium one. lol. what ever next!

LOL, Yes sorry about that one hoggmister!

been thining about this a little more, And where it snapped is right over the third gear, where one has had problems before. So it looks like as if we didn't know already that this is a weak area. I'm going to take the small grinder to the hole area and make a small radius, that might help stop the crack forming, then again who am i kidding!

i still think the main shaft was slightly bent, best we keep a tighter check on this area, eg putting on the lathe and checking with the dti gauge.

mind you we have used the same main shaft for about 6 years so hasnt done bad.

dosent the swifty box use the std main shaft?

6 years is good going i guess, would it be worth using a pre A+ shaft? assuming vegard is right about PreA+ stuff being better.

LOL fair enough.

So.... If quaife are making mainshafts for swiftune, are they the same dimensions as a std one?

ie could matt use one in his box?

Paul, your right but a Swifty box and a 2.9 diff doesn't give a good first gear so Nic from Swift tune told me, other wise yes who know's. Cheers for link Mini13 good thinking.

Matt, how old is this shaft?

I suspect that as you've now seen a failure, this wouldn't happen if you limited yourself to a certain time on your transmission components (like a mainshaft) that get re-used unlike the gears which last (i guess) anything from 3 to 12 months? Perhaps you should start buying up and stockpiling 998 transmissions...

I've only got old ones out of other cars that were running standard. But yes that's a great point, Maybe changing it every year or 2 will get around the issue.

Yes some A+ 998s boxes would be ace mate! good idea.
