These are the hole shears.

Drill a pilot and work away. Distortion free and clean cut.

Will be slower though, and you need access to both sides.

Actually cheaper than I thought

I'm looking at drilling steel already in the car, the parcel shelf for example.

For stuff like that I'd use a set of Q-Max punches as per Steve's link, and then I'd flange them for good measure.

i use the bosch ones that use a quick release arbour you can get them from bollocks and quibble (B&Q) at a reasonable price there pretty good as i use them to cut holes in 10mm thick stainless! And theyre still in good nick, my tip when cutting thick metal is to use cutting compound makes the tool last a lot longer. Luke

shame i didnt see this before, i get holesaws from work that are exelent could have dropped one off today if id seen this.

i use them alot, they dont make any marks at all if you use high speed but very low pressure, just untill you get though the paint layers, at work we do one side through thefinished surface, the go from the other side all the way through then there is much less chance of ruining either side. :)

I've got this set from Screwfix (plus a load of other size holesaws)

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/93131/Drill-...lesaw-Set-15-Pc

They were selling it at 1/2 price at my local trade counter last year but, TBH though, once you have the two different size arbors you can just buy the holesaws themselves individually whatever size you want.

But as others have said, for really clean edged holes in sheet metal, use the Q-max punches but they tend to be quite expensive at the larger sizes.

Well my hole shears have arrived (the ones Stevie linked to), so I though I'd have a play on some scrap. Piece of cake and no sharp edges afterwards either. Then I got a matching swager out and did this:

Then a feeling of satisfaction crept over me and I got all warm in side. The mini isn't going to know what's hit it *happy*

In the garage......again!!

if you ever only buy one cutter, get the 52mm as you can use it for hole cutting for dash gauges

That was the only size they didn't offer in shears, so it's back to hole saws for them *frown*

I tend to use 2"/51mm for gauges. Then adjust hole so its a nice tight fit.

There are several 51mm or 52mm "punches" available, just search "Q Max 51mm" or Q Max 52mm" on ebay.

ie, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Q-Max-Sheet-Metal-Pu...=item5d245b03e4

I've bought mine (smaller sizes) from this seller, no problem.
