Variable diffuser:

So if I'm right the nozzles create a restriction which reduces the flow and thus increases the pressure.
And then, what happens once the flow passed through the nozzle ring ? I don't see what's the interest ? Pre-compressing before going to the chamber ?
PS: ah, they say "constant compressor speed" for better efficiency.

The variable diffuser on a compressor reduces the outlet area at low flows, thereby increasing the velocity through the vanes.

It is the velocity that creates the pressure as it passes through the vanes and slows down. The velocity or kinetic energy is converted to pressure or potential energy as it slows down.

Maintaining a high velocity through the vanes/nozzle ring at low flows improves efficiency.

The efficiency is measured in energy conversion terms. So it takes less shaft power to achieve the same flow/pressure delivery and the outlet temperature is lower.

sorry for bringing it back.
but is somebody using one of them now?
here is the map of the stock r56 turbo engine with 175hp and later 184hp.

the x-axle is kg/sec.

i have no mini but use one on my 1192cc bug engine. and i am impressed how fast it spool. i thing the VE of my engine is definitly less then a the most or all mini engines. i think as N/A my engine meakes about 60 hp how it is without the turbo.
i got one kind of cheap in england ebay for 200 gbp but i live in germany.
i did the right paaring of the exhaust but is was really hand to do with this strange exhaust turbin style.

the only i can tell currently is i have up to 0,8 bar boost in first gear and currently 1 bar at about 4000-4500- end in 2nd gear.
we don't should forgett this turbo is not only spooling 500-700rpm earlier than same size single scroll turbos if done right...also this thing was joined the market in 2006 so it is one of the most modern turbo all over. vw tsi use them, also porsche will bring one 4 cylinder with this kind of turbo what really strange but you can google it in the net.
i fear a little that the turbo will be a restriction in higher rpm....but on the other side this turbo is on a 1.6 high VE engine and was seen with up to 210 hp on the weels. the JCW use the same exhaust side, just did another compressor weel on the turbo, the rest is other stuff. also alta( a Bini tuner) has a comp. weel than can flow 280hp...
so i think up to 200+ hp this thing should be no restriction.

i also use the dump valve. currently via TB swich. but go over the next days to let megasquirt do it and let it open from about 30% tps ut to 0...at the moment it work well with 1 bar of boost with the swich.
oh i also changed the wastgate tin to a normal one from an old diesel turbo that i have. works perfekt.
it was all the work worth. i hoped to find some others here that use this baby.
i bet this thing will be amazing on a mini engine like yours.

wishes
chris
