Send them the link to this thread. Do they know you and your car? Surely its a good advert for them that you use their product in such a powerful and well known car. Surely they should want to keep you sweet.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

emm, was thinking it might go the other way, cos If it was a 998cc with only 90 bhp, it would surely last. I think this is the card they are playing. But yes i might have to send them over to here, good thinking bat man.

i would agree with all the comments matt, it loks like a poor second , it sohuld have been rejected at some point in the qa process ,looking at id say a blunt tool or the lubrication on the machine stopped .
definately definately return it and demand a good one and then check that one too . you are completely within your rihts to demand a good quality product for your money .
the peace of mind will be worth it this year .

Matt - its not right as others have said, something has gone wrong in the manufacture of it. The company you bought it from will return it to the manufacturer and get a replacement without cost - so bung it back at them!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

Quaife gearkit perchance? I recall seeing a set that looked like this previously. These look like they've been done on a hob, but they forgot to then shave them.... Or they might be broached??
Either way Matt, I can only echo what others have said. Your gut is not lying; these are very coarse, unsuitable gears.

Send the buggers back.

Then buy a Minispares set and have then cryo treated instead.

The worst thing they could have done is palm you off with the deburing story. It would have been far better to come clean and replace them, then you wouldn't have lost faith in the company.

Thanks so much guys, I took on board all your posts along with my gut feeling, as it was worrying me sick.

So I started at 3 pm today and but 6 pm the engine was out.

I have the part now off the box, and I'll ring them in the morning. I just hope I don't get palmed off again, but I'll tell them what you have all said to give it all some clout. But for a large company I'm bloody DISGUSTED with it all.

I'll keep you guys informed.

evolotion, yes mate your spot on always keep carm for as long as possible anyway. Well just got a new one after going and seeing them, it was replaced without any problem. If i'm not happy with the last one they will just change it so i am. So that was ok from them. One weird thing was they didn't say it was a duff one or odd, just acted normal to it, just weird how the new one is all smooth and how i would expect it to be*wink*

Just got to put it all back together again! and i hope to also be getting my old head repaired so all going well i should be strong down the bottom and back with some power.

Thanks again for all your imputs.

They knew something wasnt right with it to start. The average person would have accepted it without thought.

Its always good to follow your feelings, its your sub conscience telling you that it wasnt right. Its a bit like when you are working with a sharp knife, your sub conscience says that you are going to do some damage to yourself, and you usualy do, the trick is, once you hear your sub coscience tell you that, STOP! lol. Moral of the story - listen to your sub conscience.

Glad you got it sorted. Its never pleasing having to deal with these situations, and we wonder why the UK has one of the highest rates of stress related illness

For some more info and pictures on gear failures, check out the tribology.co.uk site, look in the Services/Failures/Gears section. Try sending them an email, see what they think of your gear.

If you kept a sample of your old oil, send it away for analysis, you will need it if you get into a big argument with your gear manufacturer, when they claim you didn't use the proper oil.

Also this document is good,
http://www2.dana.com/pdf/FAILANAL.PDF
Figure 2 shows a new gear, you can see the normal hob marks. Figure 3 shows a pitted gear where the tooth material endurance limit has been exceeded; obviously teeth can be overloaded but poor lubrication will cause this too. Dana says that some pitting and wear over time is normal, they warn that if teeth show pitting on more than 50% of the surface, they will eventually fracture.
