With no screen the wind noise drowns the gear whine.I have wondered about an english axle, but I'd want to 4 link it,turrets, coilovers, mumford link.........Maybe when this one breaks.

Rob,I gave p on the lip seal and refitted the standard setup-so far so good.
Nic anyone can get in a midget-only the amount sticking out varies.

Awshit, tempting fate to talk about axles, the diff.let go yesterday.Same failure mode as before I think, the rollpin holding the planet shaft falls out,the shaft then emerges, biting lumps off the carrier as it goes, then no drive. *crying*

you can stop the diff planet gear shaft falling out by fitting a piece of thin plate [ 1mm] over the ends of the shaft , fixed with small bolts tapped into the diff . then if the pin shears [ usually cos the planet gears have picked up on the shaft ] all that happens is the shaft spins as well , but cant fall out . [ we do this mod with trials diffs. cos not allowed to use limo's ]
Quafe do an ATB diff for this axle which won't break .
cheaper than buggering about with english axles

Nice looking car

Thanks Carl, that sounds a good mod.I fancy the Quaife atb,but wondered about its strength.
Dave, thanks for the offer of the diff, but I managed to pick up a4.2 (same) off ebay, collected it in Tamworth at 1.30pm and was out in the midget by 6.30,about 3hours spannering (it's my age!)

you won't break the quaife , 1/2 shafts , even uprated ones , will break first !

Just talked to the local quaife and tranX dealer. For rear wheel drive he strongly recommends the tranX.Any thoughts on this?(sorry I know its rwd *blush* )

I would go for the Quaife , esp if mostly road use
They are sealed for life - no wear to adjust or parts to service
I've used one for hillclimb abuse - great
very neutral handling
The only issue with the ATB is if you are lifting a wheel , then all drive is lost , as you need some torque through both wheels

Hi Dave, about £550 plus vat.you fit your own cwp and if done professionally with new bearings etc. about £200 for fitting. There are no alternative internals for the quaife, unlike the plate types.

Got to say I've not driven a Midge with a SC box, but I had driven one with a Type 9 and it's a nice conversion, that said I've still got the old for speed in mine and it'll probably stay that way unless I break the box.

Spoken too soon today mine developed a nasty habit of jumping out of second gear.

Finally sorted various software/connection issues and got the beast set up at Mech motorsport.Stopped at 16psi boost (chicken!) and pulled 156bhp and 149lbf.ft so hope to use it now for the Summer.
Thanks to BENROSS,philc,giallofly,alex2003f1,tadge44 and many others for your help and encouragement in getting this far. *Clapping*
