Surely using some kind of "spacer" between block and head upsets the rocker geometry ?

I think you mill a load off the rocker pillars. I'm interested in how it kills the midrange. Is it because you have to back the timing off to prevent detonation?

Squish also plays a major part in how the air moves around in the combustion chamber once compressed.
