OK so there will be a boundary layer, but by head height I'd have thought you are back into the realms of laminar flow?

thinking about it, this is impossible to test.

How long would the wind tunnel have to be to get the car up to 80 mph long enough to test.

Its a bit like the Film Back to the Future. There is no way that there was enough space in that carpark to get a Delorean up to 88mph, never mind a delorean with all the extra gubbins and lead lined nuclear reactors. LMFAO

Hahaha to true!

It would defo be hard to test. What about running it in some sort of vacuum? But then again the whole point of a vacuum is no wind arrgh

wouldnt you feel the change in pressures and air movements caused by the movement of your car through the air in front?

Surely if your travelling at 80mph your the same speed as the wind so everything in front is still? or not lol

But the air in front will be doing 80 aswell!

Providing everything is constant, it would be like sticking your head out when the car is stood still with no wind.

your all wrong. your doing 80mph, the wind is going 80mph. 80 + 80 = 160

therfore your actually doing 160mph!!!!

(agree get fit carrie on it )

wouldn't the car overheat? as there would be no air flowing through the raditor (although fan could well be on) I would have thought that the ACT would be very high.

Slightly different way to look at things. I know that when im out on my bike and ive got a strong tail wind I feel absolutely no wind on my face what so ever. This will almost illimate the whole business of the frontal area of the car cutting through the air etc... as a bike/rider barely has any frontal area.

You can also hear if your travelling the same speed as the air around you, because all goes quite! *wink*

Im sure the only air you would feel would be the air speeding up as it goes over the top and around the sides of the vehicle. Ive got some notes from college when I did aerodynamics I can try and dig out the notes. Air needs to speed up to travel over a curved surface (principle of a wing) so as long as your head is in the stream of air coming off the car you would feel something. *oh well*

In my opinion you would still feel find, but maybe just like a gusty day, as wind doesn't move in a direct line, when you watch plastic bags blow about they are usually all over the place, so in that sense you would still feel it but not a lot.

If Jon was nearby you'd definitely feel wind.

So, can a plane on a runway sized treadmill designed to exactly match the speed of the wheels, moving in the opposite direction, take off?
