I used to listen for knock on the alternator bracket but you get too much noise from the alternator as well as the timing chain. I have found the best place so far to be on the heater tap take off bolts, however this isnt ideal! I have just got another stepthosope sp? that i am going to fit on a head stud betwwen cyclinder 2,3

the Saab APC system is interesting,

basicaly it controls a bleed valve and the boost is set by a pot in the APC module, if knock is detected then the boost pressure is dropped to a safe level. usefull in case of some duff fuel.

Also you can wire a light into it.

its worth a google plenty of info on them out there.

controlling boost would be a mega slow way of preventing knock though.

but it is a novel idea....way back then.
