Do pay attention at the back.

Jean has confirmed it is pronounced:

C B A

Ah, but Jean is from Montreal where the first langauge is French.

Whatever the correct pronunciation, the yanks will think that Cibie is an American company and will pronounce it si-bee.

Yeah, if you ask for C-B-A lamps in the US, you probably will get a blank stare because they won't know what you're talking about. C-B-A won't mean Cibié and lamp will not mean the same thing you want.

Apologies Jean,

I assumed from your perfect english on here and the MS forums that you were in the english speaking parts of Canada.

Great outcome.

So now EVERYONE can start impressing and educating others by pronunciating Cibié as C-B-A

Thanks Jean - and everyone else who gave input wrong or nearly right. :)

No apology needed. I'm just glad that my English is good enough for people not to realise that it's not my first language. And the spell checker doesn't hurt either (even though it wants "realise" to be "realize").

Also, I always wonder how many people on the different forums think I'm a woman because of my name. I don't think it's an issue here but most Americans won't see it as being the French name for John instead of the English female name.

Ha you have hit on my 20 year quest to correct American spelling.. I use English English spelling check on my windows computer, can't tell you how many times people try to correct me... Problem is I sometimes come across a word that I forget which way is "right" (i.e.English) like centre or center.

I love some of the town names here like - Chichester (pronounced Chy-Chester) but believe that when in Rome.. so when I refer to the American town called Chichester I pronounce it Chy-Chester, anyway if I don't they will not have a bloody clue what I am saying!!
And from now on instead of CeeBee I will say C B A

I have no idea how in 200 or so years so many distinguishable 'american' dialects have arisen?

why havent they arisen in europe also? these days we have a similar mix of nationalities...?

i know its a bit o/t, but it puzzles me a little

Would Francois be such a word, as I seem to remember it is pronounced as an S?

On 29th Aug, 2008 jbelanger said:
If you want an S sound with a,o,u you need a 'ç' (c cédille). However, I can't think of a word that has ço in it.

You're right. François is a perfect example. I was thinking common names and of the "so" sound. This sounds like "swa".

It is indeed to english speaking people, a well known french name, with the cédille, ie,

I'm learning more french today than all the times I've been to France....
