ended up chatting to the copper who pulled me about how i fitted 4-pots and how wide my c/f miglia arches are, he had a mk1 in his garage. lol

right, blimmin heck, left me books at work again, so i will give you rough reply, if you want exact measurements i will need to get back, con and use regs state that the wheels must not pertrude (unshielded) from the shell more than a couple of centimeters (i can bloody remember either 1 inch or a couple centimeters will have exact figures for you Saturday *wink* if your wheels do pertrude they must be sheilded by some form of spat or mud guard (ala lotus 7) basically the car can be as wide as you like as long as the wheels are covered ! and by wide as you like i mean within the guidlines before entering STGO and escorts are then required *happy*

Dazibee if you are a "registered" MOT center then fair enough, however i believe you cant MOT your own vehicles at your own MOT center, so that is that idea buggered

if the car is going for esential repairs prior to MOT test i believe it has to be trailered but will get back to you on that one

No I'm not an MOT centre, but I have facilities at work to weld etc. I think I have read somewhere that you can drive your MOT failure to a place to have repairs carried out so long as a prior apointment has been made. If you are driving it somewhere to work on it yourself or to a mates garage etc then get pulled by the Police how do you prove this?

It is acommon misconception that having no MOT invalidates your insurance. You need to check your insurace details.

For example, my subaru insurance just says that the car has to be in roadworthy condition (whether it has an MOT or not). So having no MOT makes no odds.

My mini insurance is on aclassic policy and it states that an MOT is a requirement to validate the insurance.

As Carl points out, having an MOT does not mean that the car is roadworthy. So plod could give you 3 points for bald tyres, even though you MOT cert say's they are ok!

The point is that the MOT is like a calibration cetificate, it proves it tested ok on the day, but nothing more.

Bingo....

I think its a spiel the cops dish out about MOT/Insurance. All a car needs to be is roadworthy, and an MOT doesnt mean that at all.

MOT does not carry points, regardless. Its only a fine.

If however you had no MOT and bald tyres.....well, obviously the tyres carry points.

Ive drove with no MOT before, and TBH, wouldnt concern me in the slightest, as I know my car is roadworthy, without some dummy MOT tester having to give their opinion too.

In the garage......again!!

I think its the DVLA who decides if they want to pursue a summons for having no MOT, same with road tax. Most of the time its not cost effective.

On the subject of taking your car across country for an MOT, what if you wish to take it to a specialist mini centre for its MOT where you know its in good hands, say, Minisport for instance, iain is a fair way from there, would that be beleivable?.

your pushing it, but hey give it a try if the wheel comes off (forgive the pun) you know its a no go.

The no mot = no insurance bit is at the discretion of the insurer, however this does not detract from the matter that it is a legal requirement, yep you may get a fine first time, but if you keep going before the courts they will start tacking points onto your licence and loading you up to the gunnels with fines, not to mention they can be sneaky and shaft you with so many hours unpaid work regardless if you are employed or not the ramifacations of this can be twatful !

so on a closing note dont piss about get the car up to date, lose the attitude "my car is roadworthy" if i had a penny for everytime i have heard this....five minutes later the car has been prohibited
