Second try (having real trouble posting photos....) and getting the photos properly edited for contrast etc....

cutting away the front.

9" diamond cuts anything...

Engine hoist is as bit big so difficult to get underneath..

This was an attempt to get the "dummy" lump out without disconnecting the downpipe - I've somehow lost the photos of the downpipe but it worked...

Had to throw another engine off one of my trolleys

Guess what is it ??? !!!!

but "dummy" engine out now...

So a bit of surgery..

So onto the rust

But with outer sill cut off..

But the inside isn't as bad as I thought..

Look at the inner sill only, not all the rust I've peeled back from the outer sill....

And finally, just for a laugh, what album (artist(s)) and track was I listening to while typing this ... ????

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Looks like you've got the classic Mini rust there, hope you don't find much more.

No, a real 998, proper wet liners machined and inserted in a new block... I still have the receipt !!!

I sold my "spare" 998 block on eBay a couple of years ago - because I didn't realise what they were worth - and got far more than I was expecting but it went to the USA....... my first (and only) eBay sale and I was obviously short changed....

NOW, back to the question, what was the track ... ????

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Well after a couple of days away (and turning the stereo down as wifey is back from her sisters)...

I decided to try and get a common exhaust fitting between the MG (N/A) engine and the tutbo lump.

I seem to have real problems with my photos since the batteries went flat in my camera and all the contrast (etc.) settings have been lost, but what I'm trying to do is get both engines to have a manifold/primary pipe system so I can swap them easily between a single exhaust system.

The engine/exhaust combinations are the wrong way around - just a result of trying dummy fits to the shell, the turbo will end up on the right engine eventually....

I've recently done something similar.

To make up my downpipe, I first fitted a standard LCB to the engine. I knew that this fitted my exhaust system OK.

I traced the plan outline on the floor, then measured the height and angle of the outlet from the Y piece.

I then made up the pipe from the turbo to suit.

It seems we often arrive at similar conclusions - I too have N/A and turbo downpipe arrangements which can be swapped around with the same pipework for the rest. I use a "clamp up" joint rather than a slip joint to make it easier to swap them around.

Yes, I would have liked a "clamp" type joint for my connection between two different systems, but, as I'm determined to use stainless, it becomes expensive... So it may be slip-on for both.

So far (new batteries in camera and it seems to be working OK so far) my main problem is the way it clamps on the bracket...

or

They just don't line up quite right.

On the N/A one I would really like (now) to fit two "bungs" for the wideband lambdas, but space is limited.

I'm not going to invest in an LCB or similar (which might give better lambda locations) but for the first trials, I think lambdas on centre and outer is probably a good idea if only I could find suitable locations on the MG downpipes....

Paul (S), you went that way obviously - I would just like to do it on the standard Metro downpipes - I'm just not sure how far back up from the "Y" they would need to be.

This how mine are currently located:

Now widebands, not the narrowbands shown.

The exhaust downpipes are the Minispares to Metro LCB type manifold items.
