well something is wrong adam, have you had the engine out, either the idler gear endfloat is to tight, or a bolt is fowling the flywheel, have you used the 2 holes on the transfer case above the starter, i had this problem once as the bolts were to long and caught the flywheel

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

I was going to suggest this. You need to try turning the pulley bolt with a ratchet!!

Like i said get a socket and a bar on the pulley nut and youll know for sure if the engine is siezed or not.

I doubt it, i recon your starter is fucked.

I bought a brandnew one for mine and was toiling with it for ages, eventually i put the one off the cooper s on and it blasted the engine round!

Interesting, ive just started having the same sort of problem today ! turn key - nothing, try again - nothing -try again it turns over ! ? starter? solenoid? I had the same prob with my flywheel aswell the two bolts above starter were used to mount the carb for s charger kit. i also had to long a bolt in the offside engine mount , might be worth checking aswell mate.

well adam if it was fine and now you cant turn over with plugs out then some thing is amiss, hopefully just a spun flywheel, but if not then engine out and check every thing mate.

Have a read through this thread:

Turned out to be seized little ends.

I had revved hard on a cold day with very rich fueling.

I think that the little ends had suffered from corrosion before I got the engine and I did not detect in the quick rebuild.

sorted it...

it was the engine earth strap..although i had checked this before, i took it off today and replaced it with a nice new one, and bingo! it fired up.

the old one looks fine really, a little corroded at one end but nothing major.

it just goes to show how such a small thing causes problems

thanks for everyones input.!

i had a very similar symptom and it was a dodgy starter solenoid when attempting to crank all that would happen is you would get a click I’m surprised no one ever subjected it but I’m glad it was something as simple as the earth strap
