Not really. Once you have got a starter and put the effort in to convert it, there is not much money left. The price I am selling them at is just about worthwhile. I think for 120 notes it is still good value.

I finished this off this afternoon.

A couple of M6x60 allen screws holds it all together rather than welded.

I've tigged the gear onto the shaft - do I need to re-harden the gear?

It fits OK on the K1200 donor engine and the gear sits in the right place and moves in and out of mesh with the flywheel.

Just need to drum up the courage to try it on a working engine.

I would have thought the heat from the welding would have drawn out the carbon making it harder.

I think heating to red hot and then letting it cool slowly has the affect of annealing steel.

Probably should have quenched it.

Depends not just on the carbon, but on the other alloying elements.

Without knowing what grade of steel it is, it's impossible to say which "heat treatment" is best.

In reallity, the issue is that the pinion is a very few teeth running past a very many others so, although the ring gear won't be anything special, the pinion has to take a lot higher wear rate.

Have you tried running a small file over an un-important area to see how soft/hard it now is ???

It's off a verto.

The thing to be mindfull of is that with the verto starter, the pinion is not central to the hole in the flywheel housing, so whatever you do make sure that, if you are using the verto pinion, fit the new starter so that it lines up in the right place, i.e. along the axis of the verto starter.

Are you offering?

Get one Mini job finished and then there is another to start straight away.

Bloody work load has gone through the roof in the last month. Put my rates up earlier in the year, but still they keep giving me more work. Not to be discouraged in these difficult times, but my Fridays can no longer be spent working on the car.

Not many chaps at my age can make money out of modelling *happy*

It's still in bits on the bench.

I chickened out on using this on the Miglia. I wasn't happy with the welded pinion.

I've got a Brise on order.
