I've used grades of paper up to 12,000 before but that was for metal work.

If you have a DA get a foam pad and 1500. The foam pad will keep the motle effect. When using the DA dont use water straight off its easier to see where you have been and where you need to work. Once you have an even finish (and this will be evident) get handy with the mop, I start with G3 cutting compound which is like a putty then I use 2 types of G10 liquid and finish with Auto glym polish.
