bit of an update,
absolutley no work done on the car since begining of december because my mum was killed and i obviously havent been in the mood for it, (i'm next of kin so i have to deal with the house and funeral and stuff, so i havent had much time either)
i've moved the engine down from my mum's to my dad's in southampton which is where i'll be staying from now on.
should have sorted a gargae soon for the car so i can carry on with the body,
only trouble is that there is no elecrtic down there, what sort of generator will i need to power my mig and angle grinder, and possibly a compressor at some point soon, (depends if i paint it or not)
split the engine and box last night so i can get the block out to slarks and start doing the gearbox at home. i have now got my 1098 crank and some +.020 1098 pistons ready to go on.
hopefully i will be ready for avon park this year even with the setbacks i've had
heres some pics. you'll have to excuse the filthy work bench it wont be like that soon i assure you, i dont want any shite getting in my nice new engine parts.
updates as and when
DAN :)

My condolences on the lose of your mother Dan.

The regards to the generator you need to find out the (watts rating) of your power tools and then work on getting a geny with a higher wattage output.

Machinemart or Ebay is where i'd be looking.

My condolences to you, too, Dan. That's a tough loss.

Keep up this good work, though. It's enjoyable, seeing the updates.

Spot of advice on using the 1098 stuff-

1) Whatever you do, don't use the circlips to hold the gudgeon pins in. I did once on a 1098 and had it escape and wreck the block. Get some of the PTFE buttons that are available to sit in there and stop the pin moving, available cheap from any decent mini spares place.

2) The 1098 crank being long stroke does not like to be revved hard. I also learnt this the hard way. At the very least get the centre main of the block "strapped" to give it some extra support. Also if you can afford it get everything balanced as well, a slight imbalance multiplied by a long stroke = problems!!! Set yourself a rev limit of 5500 if I were you to make it last.

Where did you get those pistons? I was told that decent 1100 pistons were NLA. I know that there's supposed to be some fantastic ones in Australia, just never really bothered....

tom, where are those buttons available??
i have already got a centre main strap to go on when i can afford to get the block prepped so no worries there and i will definatley get it balanced, cheers for the advice though .
vegard i got the pistons from :cough: minisport *wink*
they are proper ae ones so i assume they will be ok but we'll see when its all uo and running.

Yes like Iain says, you shouldn't have too much problem getting hold of them. Anywhere that sells pistons will know what you mean when you ask for them. Are you using A or A+ rods and pistons? As the A+ stuff uses an interference fit similar to the 1275 stuff so you then don't have to worry about circlips and buttons. Also make sure you don't get 1098 and 998 rods mixed up, as I am fairly sure they are not the same length.

1098 and 998rods are EXACTLY the same. The only difference are wrist pin->crown height and stroke of the crank.

Hmm that must have been what I was thinking of- compression height.

Oh well I'll shut up now then
