Im still sticking with choke seals. Would explein the over fueling and poor running. If its heat related its got to be something expanding e.g. valves going tight in guides or valves clearances tightening up or fueling. A cold engine will run on a very rich mixture where as a hot engine won't.

What colour are the plugs?

EDIT: If its isn't the seals...it could be running VERY lean and occasionally burning on the exhaust stroke due to having wasted spark?

When you mean choke seals would you be implying i use a choke?

Plugs are a normal colour, not sooty and not to greyish! I've ordered a mpi coil pack and some new plugs.

See if that cure's it first.

Didn't Nic have a similar problem that turned out to be a sticking valve?

It dosen't sound like a coil problem to me.

It could easily be a coil problem, I have had troubles like these with coils in the past.

That said, there are numerous other possibilities, that have been mentioned

the one for the rover and ford are different. So mines the rover one, its simple enought to change. Maybe after a few other bits though. if it is that after all still waiting on a coil pack!

i did have a thourght that maybe it could be fueling cos ive had this problem on my brothers vauxhall like backfiring and missing bad cos it was so rich but that was webbers and the main circuit was way out

but then this is one of those problems where youve got to go through the list and eliminate every problem

I've just thought of something else i did when i put it back on the road, about 10 miles ago, I put a bottle of millers cvl in, probably only about 10 liters of fuel in there? would this be a factor?

well a little update, managed about 20 miles constent running on sunday then just as i was heading up the hill to brooklands and hit traffic it started coughing and backfiring from 1500 rpm and just couldn't drive it.

So I got out pulled over, let it cool down a bit (while pushing it up the hill) then it started and ran fine.

This is getting to be more confusing than anything?

ANY BODY GOT ANY MORE IDEAS???

do you have any way of watching the map/any widebands while this is happening?

if not, get down to your freindly mot station while it is happeneing and see if they will stick it on the gas analyzer while its missfiring.

this will tell you whether its an ignition or fueling missfire! easy peasy!!

then....you can get the resistance values etc etc for the ignition components and check them all over.

no splashing out on bits that you dont need.....instead you can send that money my way.

Ok little update, i played around with this on saturday and have come to the conclusion, i still don't know what it is. It now seems to have a steady misfire on tick over, not sure if its still doing the other symptons when hot, but i'm sure the two are related.

So far i have done this.....

*Replaced Coil Pack

*Replaced Plugs

*check for spark on all 4 plugs with a spark plug checker thing!

*check the crank sensor (was wet inside the connector, so cleaned and dried and put back togeather)

Although i had the plugs out the two nearest the rad where brownish in colour, and the 2 nearest the clutch where black and slightly wet? any ideas?

errr starting to get annoyed now.

read that thread really interesting, I did a compression test last night and mine were as follow,

1 = 130psi
2 = 130psi
3 = 126psi
4 = 130 psi

Also checked the valve clearences and they seem to be different, although my thought now is with leads, so i'm going to have to bight the bullet and buy some. rubbish!

In a turbo as you know heat is a real issue if your leads are old then start there. Cheapest option first.
