Right, I'm digging this up again in the hope that someone has conclusive evidence of how corrosive E85 is (I'm looking at you, Joe). There are 2 stations within a couple of miles of my house so I'm tempted to start using it. After looking at the MSDS for it, it doesn't specify any major corrosion problems

what are you thinking of using it in?

when i rearched most of the storys of corrosion were hearsay, no real evidence...

on a modern (ish) car the hoses are ok with alcohol as most countrys have been adding it to the petrol.

i think the main problem is that alcohol is water soluble, so long term you can get rust in the tank and fuel lines.

I would say make sure you have good fuel filters and use it.

Thanks for the advice Joe. It will be used in the VNT'd E30 (1989). It has a factory CR of 8.8:1 so I can probably get away with ~0.8 bar on petrol or a hell of a lot more on E85 hehe.

I found the same lack of evidence with the bit of reading I done.

It has a steel tank, aluminium inlet manifold and head (which, as you mentioned before, shouldn't be an issue) and a combination of stainless and rubber fuel lines. I'm don't know the spec of the rubber but I'm sure they wont be natural rubber. I think I might POR the tank when I pull the rear subframe as a precaution. The fuel filter is already just before the rail so in a good location to catch crap. I might fit another further back to ease the burden though

that sounds like a good plan to me,

I'd deffo add a filter before the pump.

being german i'd expect the hose to be pretty alcohol proof, and as you say there is a lot of stainless in there.

for how much it costs I think its worth POR ing any tank that comes off,

what are you doing for fueling, as it will need richening up for the e85.

I'll have to find somewhere to get POR first. I just had a look on frost and there are shipping restrictions applied to it.

Build quality on that car is amazing so I'm sure the rubber is OK.

Fuelling will probably be left to an OMEX 710 as it's what the best RR bloke near me knows best. But if I do decide to go that route, it will be about a year and a half before I can afford it. I wouldn't be capable of building MS and there doesn't seem to be a massive cost saving if buying a built kit.

Thanks for helping me out Joe

I'm sure you could find someone to forward you some POR in an illicit box.
