It's all the hot air produced with the talking that's caused the problem !

The catch is you have to buy a new car !!- that's a total waste of money/resources in itself !!

Correct!! I'm glad someone said it, all these schemes are NEVER about the environment, it's always about money. Fair enough supporting local industry in this case, but when it comes to car tax etc it's a joke!

To be fair to Darling he is in a lose lose situation. Nothing he could have done today would make anybody happy. Even if he did exactly what the opposition wanted it would be the wrong thing.

I guess with a limit on numbers and a limit on people qualifying it may work out.

It's a total con, no one will go for it, if you've been driving around in a 10 year old car for the last year or so then there is a very good chance that you can't afford to buy a new car regardless of whether or not the government give you £2K.

This is supposedly based on a greener motoring campaign.

From back when work had me driving all over the country, I'm of the view that most of the motorway traffic (excluding weekends) is reps in company cars that are only a one or two years old anyway.

I guess all the environmentalists out there haven't considered teh impact manufacturing the new cars will have on the environment...

Not quite, industry has already made the cars, in fact they've made too many and can't shift them which is one of the things that lead to the financial down turn in the first place.

"Green" sell better then "sex" at the moment. Car advertising used to comprise of semi-naked models. Now they are surrounded by flowers and cutesy animals.

Bring back the semi-naked models, they where far more fun to watch and possible more moral.

i really wish that Mr Darling was lost out at sea. He is really fucking up this country.

Everytime he opens his mouth at the minute, it costs me more to get to work!

I think half the mess was made by his predecessor.

In my opinion Richard Noble has found the right solution, the problem is not the cars it's the cows so all be need to do is eat the cows, not his exact words but pretty close.

I would expect that if you turn up with a £2k 'cheque' from the gorvernment in your back pocket, you'll get no chance of any other discount - I'd expect you would currently get a £1k - £1.5k in some form or another off a new family car at the moment without much problem - more if you are spending more.

A guy I know has just haggled a 12% discount on his new car

What a con !!!

Apparently the Government will only cough up £1k.

The dealer has to come up with the rest. So, as stated above, your not going to get any of the normal discounts on offer.

Plenty of dealer have already been offering £1k for tradeins anyway. If you think it through it is not great, but in other countries there is some evidence that it has enlivened the car market, so potentially good for jobs I suppose.

a customer in the garage where i work rang up today to take advantage of this new £2000 scrappage allowance.

on the 29th of may he will have owned the car for 12 months so he has to wait till then to take advantage of the deal BUT the mot runs out on the car on the 20th of may, (the car your are trading in has to be motd!) customer rekons the car will need lots of work for mot (discs/pads etc) about £300 worth so hell have to have all the work done before trading it in. lol so the car will be getting scrapped with brand new parts on it, defo not helping the enviroment.

and apparently the government have employed its a company to collect and scrap the cars.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
