Just take your time. I use some of Tom and Carls techniques, but always leave LOTS of extra space between me and the car in front. Braked trailers help, but you really can't low down that fast.

I've never checked my nose weight, but my trailer tows straight as a die, never had a wobble, my . I lent it to Sprocket and he wasn't so sure.

Nose weights are an interesting one - I freaked out when I measured mine - suggest you adopt the Wil's philosophy.
Mine was 130kg so I rang Brian James (bearing in mind the Mini is as far back as it can be) and their answer was not a problem and I must say it tows very well!

Also a good inspection of your trailer - clean adjust brakes and adjust/lube wheel bearings. Finally check tyres for condition - on my old trailer which stood outside in all weathers and used old Mini wheels/tyres it consumed a tyre every other journey or so it seemed! Tyres do perish. Also tyre pressures on trailer and tow car. I have towed all over Europe with my trailers.

Lastly make sure the handbrake works well especially if you have a caravan at the top of the Trevelogue site!!!!

The RAC have flat beds and will get there a lot quicker than you can toe it there also you dont have to travel with the car!

I'm not sure how gospel this is, but I have been warned that a trailer's plated maximum weight limit is what is used in the train weight calcs now.

ie a car transporter trailer of (say) 350kg weight with a carrying capability of 1300kg has the potential to be up to 1650kg. Therfore the tow car must be rated to tow 1650kg - even if the trailer is lightly loaded or even empty.

The arguement is one of what you could try to tow over what you are actually towing

I'm more than prepared to be proved wrong - it seems slightly ludicrous but is something that niggles the back of my mind when I'm towing my cars around with my Golf.

I remember this one well - he managed to stop all the traffic!

from what I recall the car was on front forward but had no engine and a boot full of stuff - yes, nose weight was an issue!

Top tip learnt the hard way, make sure you load the car on the trailer with the engine towards the tow car, otherwise you could have all kinds of excitement in your life you dont need! A friend was towing a MK2 Zephyr with a Sierra 4x4 estate and for ease had loaded the Zephyr on backwards. Seeing the underside of the Sierra and trailer as it snaked across all three lanes of the M8 on two wheels is something I will never forget!

Also, its a good idea to stop after a few miles and check the straps are tight, things tend to settle out as you travel and straps can loose tension.

Safe travels!

leeds/wakefield.

that cannot be true, and from what the trailer inspector told me when i got a tug on the M! its not,, they look at condition of parts and gross combined vehicle weight, and if youre under your tow cars limits ,you are safe,

he even told me i'd done the right thing by spacing my axles apart for stability but apparently there is some regs or other that govern this also, but he never batted an eyelid,

Cool. Who was it who had there trailer detatch from the car just outside avonpark last year?

What was the reason for this?

Gavin Wakely.

Gavs problem was a large pot hole under a deep puddle in pissing down rain on a bend which launched the trailer into the air

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Somewhere around Swindon

practice reversing before hitching car if you have not towed before, its easier to unhitch and move an unlaiden trailer if you fuck it up

All depends on insurance, as im going to borrow my mums car and unfortunately my insurance doesnt cover me to drive other cars. So if the difference is silly then ill not bother.
