Trying fitting a thermostat.

Without one the water goes through the rad too quick and does not have time to cool down. Sounds nonsense, but I've known this to be true.

But, how hot is hot? Does it boil? Have you actually measured the temperature?

heres one for you, had this a while ago.

i know the exhaust is heat wrapped. . .
but, how close are your heater pipes to your exhaust?

could the exhaust be heating the water pipe(s) and hence the water???

This is FORD country, on a quiet day you can hear Vauxhalls rusting.

All that effort on a nice fast powerful lightweight car - why the fuck have you got a heater?

In my experience over 11.5:1 compression does run quite hot but not enough to cause a problem, whats your compression and how hot is it?

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

In the garage......again!!

my guess is the gauge reading wrong, you going off a smiths leccy gauge, capilary or the clock gauge? have you actually seen steam coming out the rad cap? does the car feel like its overheating, i say this as i have a friend with a 1380 and he has tried allsorts to get it to stop overheating, new rads, extra matrix in the engine compartment etc, turned out it wasn't overheating at all, it was a faulty gauge, he was just shitting himself it was getting really hot.

I'm with paul. I'd just lob a 72 degree thermostat in that way thats pretty much everything before getting anal with other things.

i'll go with the check the gauge too...

my smiths capilary gauge tallks bollocks, it can vary 15 deg c in half a sec just letting off the throttle....

I would get hold of a proper EFI sender with a known resistancs curve like the Bosch 0280130026 and bung it in to the head somwhere, then you can measure the resitance when hot and see if it matches what the gauge is saying.

Your capilary gauge is very sensitive in transfering the heat to the clock as the tube is filled with ether, if you get a strange 'hospital; smell, you have snapped it

Thanks for the heads up guys.

The gauge could be reading a bit on the high side. Smiths 1275 gt 3 clock gauge. But it is getting dam hot and quick to.

Steve - yep they do run pretty close to the exhaust, and the left handside heater return from the head. That pipe is bloody hot. I'll re-route things tomorrow.

Paul S- I'll nip out to minispares and get a 72 deg thermostat and bung that it to. I understand what your saying about a better controlled flow.

Paul/Dave - Compression is up there 10.5:1 at least. And the heater was left in for road use, and will be removed before the big day. *wink*

Cheers guys I'll report back tomorrow after further road testing. I've already attracted to much unwanted attention today.

If its capilary, the sender is fixed on the tubing, i had to slightly drill the hole in the head to fit it as its huge.

Its all good now lads and lassies..

After nearly a whole week of pissing about. I found the problem.

I changed everything and tried 3 rads, 3 water pumps, new thermostat, 2 sender units and complete set of new hoses. also a electric fan on running constant and mechanical pump driven fan on.

And the little bastard still read hot.

I thought it couldn’t be now and although the engine was indeed running a bit hot being a new build it wasn’t boiling.

So all those of you who said check the gauge you were right. *Clapping*

Pulled the dash apart on the bench and tested the whole thing. The voltage stabilizer was dead or dieing. Found a spare on the shelf and hay presto Roberts your brothers uncle.

Its all go go go. Very happy. Booked in for a MOT on Wednesday a 9am. so fingers crossed it'll have some miles on it by the afternoon.

I'm tempted to put an auxiliary digital temp gauge on now. Is there any available that does both water and oil temp?

Thanks again to everyone for their replies.

I drill holes in everything..!

SPA do some nice digital temp gauges, they are not cheap though.

All SPA stuff I have been used has been good, we have an oil press/temp gauge and a standalone shiftlight in the 205.
