Maybe they dry sumped them so they could have a larger volume of oil, would make sense if they have a mega oil cooler too?

Looks like some kind of dry sump is going on and the oil cooler if FECKING HUGE in the boot area, bigger than a metro rad.

I also thought that Jay, but then i think the cooler would be positioned rather high if in the boot area. Meaning all the oil would settle in the gbox, which i couldn't imagine would be good for the engine on start up... could be wrong. Always been told too much oil is as bad, if not worse than too little.

I am glad we have weeded out the dry sump experts, I am sure the ARG/Howley experts knew what they were doing over us amatures.

I will make it my mission week to find out how it worked.

Another bit of "hearsay" from a very reliable "friend of a friend" who used to work in the pit crew is that the engines were overbored to 1400cc.

John, Speak to Turbo Dave, he used to know Phil Hepworth reasonably well, you might get a phone number *wink* I used to have his number (courtesy of Dave) but lost, however, The bloke that does all my machining work knows/ knew him very well.

One thing I am not sure of though if the company was still trading under the name of Howley Racing, or whether they had changed the name to Racespec, either way, Phil knows what he is doing.

Im not convinced its a dry sump. I think its just simply an extra oil cooling system. the engine is not a problem, but How do you dry sump a gearbox?

Loads of Minis have been dry sumped in the past and present...It does work. I guess you can run with a LOT less oil in the sump this way.

This certainly isn't true. My Gp A block, pistons etc came from Phil Hepworth & is 1293.

Like I said Phil "hearsay" but "maybe" some were, who realy knows.

I to am not totally convinced it is dry sump, proper dry sumping an A series is a little bit of a strange thing to do but yes Vegard the Viking says it has been done lots of times before.

I have by accident ran my race car on 2 litres of oil, only on very hard cornering did I loose pressure so having just enough to do the job is the way to go, you just need to have an uninterupted supply.

Another friend of a friend (Fastcarl) knows somebody who worked for Rover in developements, they tried many types of bearbox bearing to reduced drag to increase ecomony. so they were on the case trying what absorbed power.

I too have seen a few done from back in the day, bloke at work was showing me pictures of cars in the 80s running dry sumps.

I thought the best thing about D/S in a mini was being able to run a proper gear box oil?

It will still only run engine oil, I have a reciept from Roger Dowson saying they added SIX, yes 6, 2 litre cans of Motal V300 competition oil. so 12 litres in all.

ckikey 12 litres!

i would imagine with them slicks those metros could generate a fair amount of cornering ability, it woulnt suprise me if even with a cwp they had oil surge issues.

CWP what the f*** am i on about! I mean centre oil pickup.

Thats pretty much what I was thinking, if they had big oil coolers they must have been or been worried about cooking the oil. A dry sump would allow you to run as much oil in the system as you like so that would also help with the heat.

There must be some balance between reliability and performance.

Because running that amount of oil as you say is a bloody lot of weight to have in the car. Almost a penalty in racing.

And being a works team. Parts are FOC so. I wonder why the did it...?

Probably the only way the car would last the race distance.
