I think you must be able to.

As someone mentioned recently you can measure your crank endfloat by getting a DTI gauge on the flywheel through through the starter housing and levering the crank pulley.

I always use the thinnest smear of oil both on the back, and the front of my shells when plastiguaging. Fact is, oil alwayus gets behind the shells / thrusts, so i measure mine in what i feel is 'most representative' of what it will be in service.
