Interstingly Mahle Powertrain (previoulsy Cosworth technology) did just this on their downsizing technology demonstrator so it can't be all bad. It says on their site that they used "through-bolting for low distortion" and I was told at the 2007 Frankfurt automotive show that this is what they had done to manage cylinder distortion in the alloy block as it was twin turbo'd and had a 30 bar max BMEP. Can't be all that bad!
