Thats a good point, i never thought about power loss through bore flex. Common sense really lol.

What wall thickness have you got between cylinders 2 and 3?

Don't minispares now sell 73mm pistons? I take it they have a slot instead of hole?

Just my tuppence worth as I have owned/own both types of car wht you are looking into, both a n/a 1430 fully built stonker with 136bananas on the rollers and I currently own a 1293turbo (and in the middle of building a 1380 turbo but thats taking forever*happy* )

IMO for big power and reliability go turbo, the 1430 was no where near the power/torque I get from my turbos, yes you could just hit 100mph in third but to drive it was a pig in comparison, with such a cammy engine it was purely suited to track sessions, I love cammy engines butI think for the money and potential power one word? Turbo!!! *smiley*

I achieved 3.75mm between 2 - 3 with 3.95mm between 1 - 2 and 3 - 4

That was by using a VERY good old skool machine shop (Scholar in Suffolk).

The gasket fit was here,

Although this actual gasket has never been used - one of the dodgy Belgium ones.

As for the 73mm pistons, I think it was Vegard who has said MiniSpares are now selling the Hypatec ones, although presumably at a higher price than you can import them from Oz..... :)

EDIT - I should add, those photos were a trial fit with the Hypatecs with their standard dish, before I machined them out to 14cc (there is another thread on the machining).

Thats a surprising amount of mental left between the bores. Good work there Rod!

Thats given me food for thought.

James,

I am impressed with my 1430 It's an absolutely awesome road car, and manages fairly well on track too. Love it !!!

Realistically, it could never manage the performance of a well built turbo motor, and the extra safety margin of not having to offset bore or have a stroker crank would give a slightly overbore turbo motor the advantage in reliability too in a track application.

Rod S.

Any chance of the measurements you used to get your block machined like that?

Perhaps something I could provide a machine shop with?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Hmm... I think I'll go with a 1293cc then... I'm looking for the best of both worlds, and if the 1430 would not be good fore turbo then I'll not use it. Or maybe contemplate it later, after I've run a turbo on a large bore for awhile. Thanks for all your input guys!

mmmm ??? (MiniMadMotorMan)

Here's a scan of the actual piece of paper I gave to Scholar (Rendalsham, Suffolk) and the "expected" measurments are exactly what I got back.

It's basically what Visard recommends for 73.5mm and 74mm blocks, but after accuarately measuring my own block (the top figures) and measuring the gasket, I decided it was worth it for 73mm too.

But measure your actual block first....

If you want a high res image, PM me your real email address.

Rod.

Thanks Rod. I understand I would have to measure my own block but think it would be worth it for head gasket longevity on a 73.5mm bore.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I've looked at bored and standard blocks before, measured and compared them. And i realised that there is a great deal of difference.

But only now i have seen that diagram, it has hit me, and i realise the extent of how the wall thickness is greatly reduced.

Thanks for posting that up Rod!

The ironic thing is that because Scholar's are so "Old Skool" they insisted on the measurments being in imperial as well as metric....

And although I am seriously old, I don't use imperial !!!!!

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Do you mean 73.5mm pistons to use with a stroked crank? To make 1430? Because to make that capacity with a standard stroke crank you need triumph pistons iirc 74.7mm

You bought the KAD block off ebay then?

Keep your eye out for a set of triumph pistons.

Out of interest the caps would be able to be used on another block but you would have to mill about 20thou of the bottoms of each for them to be line bored again.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I had a set of Triumph standard six pistons. I threw them away, as they were far from performance items, but I have seen some Hepolite 'PIP' pistons for that engine, so all is not lost.

Also worth trying to find out what engine the Powermax 1380 pistons are actually from since they come on 'STD' and '0.51' (73.5 and 74mm respectively) Surely they would also do a '+1.00)?
