No one has suggested over fueling! Too rich and you get the same problem.

Hi,

Basically the smoke must be from either warn valve seals or warn piston rings - is that right?

I am getting the head sorted at some point, so how would i be able to tell if it is the piston rings as apposed to the valves.

Would squirting oil though the spark plug holes and then performing the compression test again tell me if the rings are warn?

Thanks

Jon

So just to clarify, how much oil should i be putting in? Just a couple of drops, i.e. tea spoon full?

If the compressions go up this means that the piston rings are warn?

Thanks

Jon

HI,

Done the wet compression test this morning and the compressions have gone up.

They are now:

260 255 250 270

So I need an engine rebuild pretty much!

Is this something I should be doing right away or does it not matter too much for the time being?

Could this also be explaining why the engine is so down on power?

Thanks

Jon

To go up from 180/190 to 250plus means your rings/bores are shot.

Also it obviously has (or is meant to have) a pretty high static compression ratio to start with (ie, you need quite a high CR to achieve 250 plus on an average engine) but it's probably not surprising if it's a well tuned N/A engine.

The low actual compression ratio is certainly a major reason why you are down on power, but there may be other reasons too.

How long you live with it depends on how much money you are wasting on excess petrol and oil consumption and if the smoke is bad enough to get you pulled over.

Also, with such a large jump from putting the oil in, there may be ring or land damage that you can't see without pulling it apart.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

O.k Thats great thanks.

I am pretty gitted TBH, I bought the engine off a guy on theminiforum and he said it was 1500 miles since it was rebuilt and said it ran like a dream.

Obiously it was all lies as i now have to take it all apart.

Thanks

Jon
