I think the idea of staged turbos is a good one. There are a few production cars that have them, Legacy Gt for 1, and a Golf had a staged SC and Turbo.

I guess the idea is that you can run a larger 2nd turbo with a high boost threshold, but also very high efficency. This potentially could produce more power. You would need the smaller turbo to give any driveability at all. This is a slightly different approach to what others seem to be considering (i.e. 'just filling the low-down power gap, pre boost threshold, of the turbos we are currently using')

Having said that my turbo is near 80% efficient and has a useable boost threshold. So it seems like a lot of effort, but could still be fun.

Ahh, yes. The other reason to need more than one turbo is if you have such a big fucking engine that no single turbo will supply enough air. Case in point above Robert.

What are they all stuck to?

It's only an LS1, the use of that many turbos is just for a laugh and not needed at all.

When it is relatively easy to size a single turbo to give useable boost from 3000 to 7000 rpm, then what is the point of multiple turbos?

Better play with electronic boost control than to faf about with a second turbo IMHO.
