check the spring to see if it is flat when assembled.

It was very flat when it was assembled mate...I take it thats not right and it shouldn't be

I don't believe the backplate machining will affect it if you can see the plunger moving, simply because the spring pulls the backplate against the flywheel with the friction disc between them. when you push on the thrust bearing, this pushes the diaphram and the backplate together, away from the disc, hence dis-engaging the clutch.
Stop speculating and start stripping. Almost guaranteed it is primary gear.

it is stripped mate. I have it in bits on my drive at the moment. laptop sat in the garage. Going to check the primary gear end float just now although it spins freely and I checked to make sure the clutch plate went in and out smoothly....

Ive fitted a couple of ultralight flywheels to my cars, and i found the clutch slave wouldnt push the arm far enough out to fully depress the clutch, i welded an extention into the plunger (between slave and clutch arm) to sort the problem, whether this is the right way or not i dunno, but ive been running like it for a couple of years!

done this in the past,
i read a calver tech thing and he said there's no real reason why the slave never goes back to how it was....
