A 4 pin diff should be on your list for when you do have some spare cash. That should be do able with the engine fitted, but I would try and put s/c drops in it while you have it apart.

is a hardened diff pin a good compromise?

i always wonder with these. if they have a hardened casing or are they made from harder material?

i have edited it to make it a bit clearer .

in my personal experience the weakest link in the stock drivetrain is the single pin diff ,followed by the helical gearbox gears . i have yet to break the helical drops , and am at the 200 bhp area powerwize .

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

seems to be a lot of myths about the standard box, Ive recently stripped 2 turbo box's and a nat 1275 box. all the diff pins were fooked, worse came from the turbo's of course but double roller was fine or at least ok in tubos but knackered in the 1275 box? Everything else looked as new and looked like it would take a lot more greif!

There was a rather techincal thread a while ago about sc drop gears vs std drop gears.
And I think the conclusion that was drawn in the end was that std drops are stronger but the problem comes in when the bearing supporting start failing.
The gears are able to "tilt" and then start to wear the thrust washers quite badly and this is when problems start to occur.
The diff on the otherhand is a different story. 4 pin all the way.

"So wat we gonna do tonight Brain?"
"Same thing we do evernight Pinky!"
"Try to take over the world!"
