We recently got a 450d, prices have come down a fair bit now that the 500 is out. Narrowed it down to the same 2 that you have, but the canon just pipped it. Don't regret the decision at all, have been getting some cracking pics from it and I'm firmly a beginner when it comes to photography.

Gents,

How much better for me would a bridge camera be rather than a point and shoot, is it going to make a big difference or do i need to go for an slr.

I enjoy taking pictures (mainly motorsport, stood and moving) but am not sure if im that involved for an slr.

Im i right in thinking if i buy a dogs bollocks camera its still only as good as the thing behind it pressing the buttons.
Would i have to get involved with different lenses or would one do most then i could develop if i wanted ??

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks Rick

I found when I go my first DSLR, I started off with pretty much everything on auto and I was using it as a glamorised point and shot. However over the last couple of years I've slowly been turning the automatic settings off and I prefer the results I get when I shot manually which these days is 99% of the time.

To paraphrase the TV advert:

"something really cool happens when I press the shutter of my coolpix, faces are highlighted, motion blur is detected & eliminated, and it also does a load of other shit I can't remember"

but

"something cooler happens when I press the shutter on my DSLR, it takes the picture I want"

As for lenses, they're pretty much the same as automatic settings, if you're using it as a glorified point and shot then it doesn't make too much difference, but if / when you start to experiment & get more creative then you start to notice the difference. Ironically out on all my lens my favorite one is actually the cheapest on that Nikon sell, it's not good for motorsport mind but it's really fun & creative.

Rick I've got a bridge camera.

For me the advantages are, it will fit in a decent sized coat or even trouser pocket, it does have a good range of different settings

Disadvantage is that for fast moving cars it can be hard to get it to take the shot fast enough. I've played with a few of the settings and can now get a fast shot, but not always crystal clear.
But this is probably more down to me operating it.

The SLR's are a nice thing, but a huge lump, and I like a few pictures but not to the point of lugging a huge thing about. In all honesty I don't think I would take a SLR with me to the places I take my bridge camera.

Rick bridge cameras have the advantage that there small enough to take out day to day without the additional lenses yet they have all the good functionality from an slr like apature and shutter priority

I have a lumix bridge camera and it really has served me well i still use it when i cant take the slr

new version of mine:

Bit of a thread revival.
Which camera did you go for in the end?
I was looking at the D60 but it looks like it has been discontinued :(

Right, i had a look this afternoon and liked what i read about the D3000. I popped into tesco and picked up a copy of "What Digital Camera" as it had the D3000 vs 1000D and the D3000 came out on top. It has a guide function which should be very helpful :)

This is the bundle i'm looking at: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/3970750/ar...ikkor-18-5.html
Will the included 55-200mm be suitable for taking motorsport pictures?

the 55-200 should be ok for motorsport stuff, i found it a bit short and went for a 70-300. kean still uses my 55-200 with no issues i dont think.

the D3000 looks like a newer version of the D60 with a couple of extra little bits so should be fine. it's usually down to personal preference between nikon/canon, i'm a nikon fan personally.

Suitable if a funny word, given that the D3000 has a 10 megapixel sensor and assuming that you're unlikely to print anything bigger than A3 you can get away with cropping photos quite a bit with no noticeable image degradation, so you should be OK with a 200mm lens.

That said a couple of years back whilst taking photos at Castle Combe a random stranger lent me one of these:

http://www.europe-nikon.com/en_GB/products...Query=l2&ID=638

It was very nice and rates no.4 on my lust list.

If you want something with a bit more zoom, I've just put my big lens on ebay if you're interested, it's non HSM mind:

Just dragging this one back up. I have just upgraded my camera, so will have a Nikon D60 with kit lens 18-55mm for sale, not decided on price yet, just wondered if anyone was interested as I'd rather sell it to someone on here that I trust.

About £300 seems to be the going rate on the likes on London Camera Exchange.

Does anyone have any recommendations for flashes? I'm after a hot shoe jobbie that I can also use off camera so will also need a way to trigger it *Idea*

What camera have you got? I'm guessing you went for the D3000 in the end?

I've got a suite of SB-600s and they're great both on & off camera, would really like SB-900s but they're twice the price.

Triggering them off camera you have three options:

Cable: Such as an SC-17 limitations are obvious.

RF Triggers: Can get them cheap on ebay but you have to have the flash fully manual.

SU-800: Expensive but it's a fantastic bit of kit for remotely controlling multiple flashes.

Yeah D3000 so would need something like the su to trigger them unless there is a alternate way to do it....

Rob H

The only other option is the RF Triggers which you can get pretty cheaply on ebay, although you can't use them iTTL but if you're shooting in manual it throws open a whole host of cheaper flash options such the old SB24 & SB28.

If you haven't seen it already have a read of the strobist site:

Thanks for that link, I'll have a read through :)

Yeah shoot in manual, normal rf triggers will do for now, I can always upgrade to su-800 at a later date if I go for the sb's.

Regarding the actual flashes I'd like ones that have a light sensor so they can be used as slaves.

Well after this weekend i can honestly say that a DSLR is probably one of my best purchases (other than a mini of course :))

Has anyone used a Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G AF-S VR lens?
I'm looking at something that will work with my current camera so needs to be AF-S ideally and would also work with FX cameras incase i upgrade in a few years?

What where you up to? as neither you not your old man were at Avon.

I've not used the 70-300G (used the 70-300D) but it seems to get really good reviews on the Nikon forums.
